Matter Storage Units
« on: May 23, 2015, 06:36:47 PM »

Turns out you don't need to mount them; just keep them in your inventory and they'll fill up with matter from the ground.  Not sure if it's intended behaviour, but it's big; I was always missing either the utility slot or the support to bother with them (and therefore fabricators) before.  This may be common knowledge, but it's definitely something people should be aware of.

There's no such thing as 'common knowledge' at this point ;) I saw your reddit comment - thanks for the tip!

This is one of the very last features I added to the game before release as I was working on balance. I found it was really annoying to have to juggle utilities just to LOAD matter storage units--it was pointless micromanagement so I decided to have the game take care of it for you :D.

Of course you can still load manually which you may want to do in some situations, but fabricators and building already require several steps so it's nice to take some out of the loop.

You should make Item Storage containers work like that too :D
(Just kidding, that'd be OP as fuck)

Haha, and equally annoying, as well... "Why am I carrying 10 batteries?!?!"

How do you manually unload a matter storage unit?

There's no way, unfortunately. I think the best you can do is connect it to yourself to add its supply to your own, and then disconnect it.

How do you manually unload a matter storage unit?
Can you give a usage scenario? What are you trying to accomplish?

Probably transfer matter from one storage to other (e.g. found a bigger one?)

True, though that can be accomplished by attaching the larger one then detaching the smaller one. It will take a small amount of matter to perform the transfer, but a little loss for a transfer of matter is within reason.

At the same time, I don't see a way to enable a dedicated "remove matter from unit" feature without adding a new interface paradigm that doesn't fit into the existing ones.
