« on: March 30, 2016, 11:32:24 PM »

This week's seed: Lonely Soldier

Can Cogmind make friends?

The Weekly Seed is open to anyone, and we encourage you to to share your experiences, stories, and tactics over the course of your run.

The rules are as follows:
  • The Weekly Seed begins from the date this thread is posted and lasts about seven days.
  • Make sure you are running the correct version of Cogmind (see thread subject).
  • Enter the seed and abort your current game to initiate the seed (more details are below).
  • Verify you are not running the tutorial and that the screenshots below match your game.
  • Play through the game once. This is a friendly event and we are all honest people.
  • When finished, post your scoresheet here (it should be the newest file in /scores) and any other screenshots/stories/strategies you wish to share with the community.
  • If you want to share details about the seed or your approach, make sure you use spoiler tags.
  • Due to the spoilerific nature of this thread, be sure to avoid reading details about the seed if you haven't completed your run.

Good luck and have fun!

HOW TO ENTER A SEED

Here's mine. Died somewhere I've never been before (extension?). Lots of enemies in this run, I was almost always running from them. The stairs were easy to find though, I guess I got lucky.

Weekly Seed #34 Playlist

Windows 10 decided to install itself this week and it jacked up my mic.  Bad new is, I didn't notice it until after I finished the episode.  So, you'll have to do without my "expert" advice and commentary for the first episode.  Good news is, I made it to a second episode.  Enjoy! ...or not ;)

- Episode 1: Materials, Storage, Recycling, Factory.
- Episode 2: Red Alert, Caves, Crapton-o-dudes, Death.

Ugh terrible run.  Got ambushed by 2 pest squads out in the wide open on -7.  They blew off my propulsion, making re-positioning impossible, and that was basically it.  Next time!

*Some spoilers follow*

This run I went back to the caves. Alas my journey to Data Miner is cut short in the floor before it. For some reason, hordes of enemies keep spawning. I narrowly escape to a Factory Exit I had spotted earlier, with only 55 core integrity left.

The next two floors are difficult since I am scantily clad, like a showgirl at Computex. I flee a lot, start to rebuild only to be stripped again due to encountering many pests and hunters. I escape through Extension.

It goes a lot better this time around. I restock completely and raise an army. Someone freed 007 and we make short work of the opposition. I keep creating botnets and purging the alert to keep it down.

I go to the Cetus Mainframe and I try my fab password given to me by 007. I get 'Resources insufficient'. 200 years in the future, and error messages are still cryptic nonsense. Color me unsurprised. Maybe my 100 matter container is too small? I shall investigate another time.

I meet Dr Zhirov in the archive. Seems like a nice guy. He gives me another password, which yields the same error message. More mysteries.

I would have loved to have signal interpreter to see what the exits were in the archive, but I didn't. I had explored south last time, so I go north. It is the Factory exit. Rats. Before I leave, some nuke go off and destroy most of the place. I wonder what happened exactly.

Back in Factory, I immediately find an exit which turns out to be the Upper Caves. I explore all of it and find a single exit in the first floor. I also find a log for an exit in Research. Good to have.

I explore all of the second Cave floor, and almost get stripped near some kind of enemy enclave. I lose all my weapons, but luckily I manage to activate dormant allies while two other robots are pounding on me. That was close! I find a locked branch and the exit.

Research at last! The first floor is very difficult thanks to the hunters, even though I know where the exit is. Not having any launcher or weapon to destroy walls is annoying. I get surrounded due to an unlucky encounter with a programmer dispatch, a hunter squad and a bunch of sentries. I lose my weapons and flee. I make it to the exit, but I'm battered.

In -2, I switch to stealth mode, as I hoarded the advanced version of the sensor, interpreter, scanner and scan processor. I also have a spectral analyzer, giving me +8 vision at no power cost. Pretty good.

I don't have flight units and can only hover at 50, which is not fast enough to lose programmers. Eventually I get sizable batch of robots on my trail. I get annoyed and kill them all with a launcher. I also kill a behemoth safely in a room: I have LOS on it but it doesn't LOS on me, for some reason.

I encounter more programmers and hunters. Those hunters are funny. They seem to think they can mess with me just because they're big, bad and ugly. I put an end to their delusions. I stumble on the exit (so much for that terrain scanner), and pick up a experimental hacking suite laying near it. BTW, these are always identified. Is it intended?

In Access, I lose my sensor and terrain scanner early due to being spotted by a scout near a nest of pests. I find an improved hacking suite and hack the location of the exit, which is at the other end of the map. I make it without much trouble, even though I'm running mostly blind. There's no wall protecting the exit. I still hack the door, just to show that I could. Then I use my enhanced nova cannon to dig through the front walls, and take out the behemoths without incurring return fire.

A terminal showed that were only 3 garrisons in Access. I already disabled one. I try to take out the second, but I don't have enough firepower to destroy it, and sealing has 0% chance. I should have jammed it, now that I think about it. Then, I piss off the AI a little too much, so I get stripped and flee naked to the exit. A good run!

Very impressive win, especially in light of the increase in difficulty in Alpha 7.  Hunter teams keep ending all of my runs :(

Yes, I do think they could use a nerf. Crits through walls are nasty.

That's one hell of a score there. You topped the charts.

Yeah, until Decker decided to quit running around with wheels and auto-guns.

For this week's run I tried to get me some friends, since 1 is the loneliest number.  To that aim, I went to storage and picked up a couple buddies.  Recycling proved to be unfruitful this time around in terms of allies.  However, I did actually manage to fabricate a few grunts along the way.  Caves (on -4!?) also provided a couple short lived buds.

On that note.... the caves are a real pain when entering from -4.  The spawns are tough and they're in packs.  On the bright side, I was finding all of this juicy research intel.  That's pretty awesome, because research is impossible for mere mortals.

I found an exit in caves, which lead to.... more caves.  That level proved to be my undoing.  I searched the entire map only to find an entrance to Warlord.  Unfortunately I must have missed the exit in some small nook.  Meandering around the map found me a couple of ARCS loaded with pests.  They proved to be too much for my battered Cogmind to handle.  Anything else and I could have dropped my drawers and outrun them, but not the pests.

Until next week.

Argh, I missed this seed. Last week there was construction (jackhammering...) in the building, so I couldn't stream even though I was available, so I worked on Alpha 8 instead :P

Impressive run, Decker! I'm surprised anyone managed to win Alpha 7 because, yeah, Hunters :P. Alpha 8 and 9 will each be a little easier (though I don't have any plans to change Hunters specifically just yet).

I go to the Cetus Mainframe and I try my fab password given to me by 007. I get 'Resources insufficient'. 200 years in the future, and error messages are still cryptic nonsense. Color me unsurprised. Maybe my 100 matter container is too small? I shall investigate another time.
Did you really use it on the Mainframe? And it gave you that message? You're supposed to use it on the Manufacturing Module controls, and if it gave you that message I need to fix the system because it's not supposed to give that response except once you've used it in the correct location and are trying to use it a second time at that same proper location (in which case it won't be so cryptic!).

There is a specific specially-named terminal to the east around the corner that you can use it on. (O7 indirectly refers to the code as a backdoor involving the fabrication network.)

I meet Dr Zhirov in the archive. Seems like a nice guy.
I think you're the first person to see that :)

He gives me another password, which yields the same error message. More mysteries.
Here you mean O7, yeah? He does give you another code, but you can't use it anywhere yet. (He tells you where that one's used, but you might've taken it to mean any old terminal--he's talking about MAIN.C itself!)

I also kill a behemoth safely in a room: I have LOS on it but it doesn't LOS on me, for some reason.
Because they're large they can sometimes not see you around corners, similar to Sentries in their wall cubbies only worse.

and pick up a experimental hacking suite laying near it. BTW, these are always identified. Is it intended?
Ooh, good catch. As an experimental part they're supposed to be unidentified prototypes, yeah. I'll fix that. (Note that even so, they will never be faulty, you just aren't sure what they are until you attach it.)

I found an exit in caves, which lead to.... more caves.  That level proved to be my undoing.  I searched the entire map only to find an entrance to Warlord.  Unfortunately I must have missed the exit in some small nook.
Layout Spoiler: You'll notice that once you reach the second linked cave map, regardless of depth, the exit to the next floor up will always be fairly close to where you enter. The only reason to head off to the other side of the map is to head deeper into the caves (though yeah those deeper maps won't be fully open until Alphas 8 and 9 add them).

I tried on the terminal directly above the mainframe IIRC (it's been a while). I'll try on all terminals next time. Maybe the error message when it's used on the wrong terminal should be something else, though? 'Resources insufficient' seems like you're missing something, not that you're at the wrong location.

Ah, I thought it was Dr Zhirov that was talking then.

Right, that's what I mean--the message should only appear if you're using it at the proper location (and have already used it up before). The message should read something like "unknown command" elsewhere. "Resources insufficient" is relevant only when used properly, and you'll know what it means.

I just checked your score sheet to be sure, and yeah you entered it in a different terminal.

Edit: I've confirmed this was a bug--entering a unique manual hack into the wrong terminal still counts against its usage limit, and you can even get the unique message at any terminal even if not applicable. Fixed for Alpha 8, thanks. (Next time enter the code at the manufacturing controls--you'll be happy you did.)
