[beta 9.4] Defensive hackware and rewiring disabled bots
« on: March 07, 2020, 12:29:50 PM »

Not sure if this is a bug, but it "feels like" rewiring disabled bots found e.g. in Extension is a lot harder with a Ghost Barrier equipped than without. It could just be the law of large numbers at work, though?

Did you mean offensive hackware? Doesn't seem like it since you mention Ghost Barrier, which is clearly defensive hackware... but... defensive hackware is completely unrelated to rewiring, where the chance of success simply = 10+(offensive hacking/2). There's nothing else involved at all there.

The fact that it's generally a pretty low chance (unless you have a lot of offensive hackware, of course) means that there is huge variance in how long it can take, anywhere from instantly to 20+ turns if you're really unlucky!

I was using a remote datajack which says it gives a base chance of 50%, but it still seemed to take 4+ turns on a number of bots. Sorry, should've included that in the description! My thought process was: I wonder if these count as allies and therefore your own hackware is defending them against your hacking attempt... Though, now that I reread the description, it specifically says temporarily disabled hostiles, not the kind you find in rooms in Extension. Maybe that is an important difference?

The code there is equally simple: If it's an ally you have a 100% chance, and if not then it's 50+(offensive hacking/2). Defensive hackware is unrelated to this.

In particular the disabled bots in Extension are not allies until you rewire them, so it's not 100% there. You could still certainly just get unlucky and need 4-5 attempts on a bot--it's super simple code so there's nothing else going on there, just the RNG.
