General Discussion / Re: Alpha1b fanfare!
« on: June 13, 2015, 06:59:45 PM »
I know nothing of coding, but my question would be: why are the trails being rendered if I couldn't see the unit in the first place? Wouldn't the 'easy fix' be to only draw them if I have LoS, thus removing the abuse I am currently subjecting the game to?

It is not a coincidence that I have trails cranked to max duration

I can't say I'd use something like that. Frequently swapping parts is matter-intensive - I only really swap in/out hackware. Also, I'd caution against the use of sensor arrays if you aren't moving very fast, but if it works it works.

I suspect there are a few thermal weapons with really similar stats, but I would need to pore over the data to find one. I just vaguely remember that fact when comparing items on a run a long time ago...

On a more serious note, why not also allow highest score to be a thing? I guess that's a little more difficult to keep track of than a black and white win state, something we'd need a leaderboard to automate.
Are you trying to kill me?! Jesus christ, as if I need more things to keep on top of... I can't do everything!
If we go THAT infernal route, though, I think I'm off to a good start with a high score of 10,910 in Alpha 1. I need more time in this new version to grind out a decent score.

I escaped again. AMA

Score sheet

I've been doing combat runs for the last week and they really drain the energy out of me. It's so disheartening to have no respite from combat, to have all your parts wiped again and again in a single run - it's like, if I have to rebuild myself from scratch, why didn't I just run naked through the game to this point? Oh, right, score. I keep forgetting.

Anyways, so new version comes out and I do another combat run and get a score of 8700~ but only make it to -4. Our good friend Arseface makes three mistakes: he says out loud he wants to be the first to win this version, he says it in front of me, and then he goes to sleep. I am a cruel and spiteful demon, and so I decide my next run will be a speedrun. I won literally the first try - that is, my second run on this version. I had a feeling I could have won a dozen times in the last week if I wasn't trying to master combat, and I think this confirms my suspicion.

This run I hacked a ton of lore logs too, so I'll be updating the wiki shortly with some REALLY cool info. I would have been happy with this run even if I died just because of the lore I gathered. There was a moment at the end of this run where I thought it was game over but then something magical happened and I was able to make a break for the staircase. Kyzrati, you dirty trickster you! If I'd known about that last time, haha...

When you guys (read: everyone else) figure out the secret to floor -1 everyone is going to realize just how fuckin' easy a speedrun of Cogmind is. The 'speed' stat in Cogmind is ridiculously OP and Arseface and I could rant for an hour on the topic. This run only took me less than 2000 turns and an hour and a half of my time. I'm sure a dedicated individual could get it below an hour with a small dose of luck and intense concentration.

Anyways, I seem to enjoy the sound of my own voice too much, so I'll shut up and stop bragging. It's back to the fuckin' grindstone with combat runs... As soon as I succeed I'll write up another huge gripe post because until then I don't know how valid my complaints are, but you can bet I have plenty.

Yo Arseface, I don't mean to be rude but you said you wanted to be the first victory on Alpha 1b and I can't have that.

Semi-on-topic, I was kind of wondering if you ever plan on implementing unique floor tiles and stuff. He mentioned lava tiles (and I'll admit I thought about lava too) , but there are definitely other - possibly more thematic - possibilities.

36
Treads and high-tier legs also actually double as really good armor. If you've got empty prop slots you're saving for more hover mods, fill 'em with offline treads in the meantime.

37
Things like this push me to make a BADASS bot with HUGE THREADS and MANY EXPLOSIONS and none of that wimpy running away or sissy hacking... Though it usually ends very badly...
REAL MEN USE CENTRIUM HEAVY TREADS TO CARRY THE WORLD 'CUS THEY'RE SO TUFF AND CARRY LOTS OF STUFF

No really, I just had a semi-decent combat run. Scored 8700~ but it ended pretty treadfully when I couldn't find spares.

There's a unique location on one of the Factory floors with a legit triple-door entrance. You should definitely go in, lots of goodies. Always fun to find!

Well, I really appreciate the effort! I still sort my parts like crazy, as silly as it is. It helps me remember what I'm losing and what I need to replace. Armor at the top, heat sinks in the middle, computers at the bottom...

There's a typo in the [DSF] log. 'loses' should be 'losses'

44
I think Kyzrati has said this'll be something he looks at, but I can't remember what exactly the resolution was. The issue is that with keyboard, you are issuing commands one at a time, but with a mouse you are simply saying 'go hear and damn anything that gets in the way'. You could always click one square at a time... >_>

45
That shouldn't really be possible. Technically speaking, if it is your turn, you will move next bar nothing. However, if you were using mouse input and moving a few squares, it's entirely possible that it moved into the doorway a turn before you moved there. That is simply an inherent flaw in using mouse input over large distances.

My "favorite" collision was running into a Tunneler and having both a reactor AND my power amp disabled. Soooooooooooo maaaaaaaaaad

Holy shit yes, Kung Fury was the best movie ever. Coming from me that either means a lot or very little because I hardly watch anything. It's only 30 minutes, just make some popcorn grab the wife and sit down, it's amazing. I've already watched it 3 times and have designs to watch it another one or two times, depending on how things go.

Edit: To stay on topic, I'm really fond of bizarre electronic music. IMO the stranger the better. For Cogmind?... Tough question. I feel like I need some retro 8-bit dark-and-synthy beats with strong ambient elements... I don't know if I have anything that fits that bill, haha. 'Monolake' does some great ambient, we'll let 'Telefon Tel Aviv' bring the melody and mood, and a sprinkling of 'Binarpilot' to give us the 8-bit robotic grooves.

Double Edit: As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to build my favorite electronic music playlist ever and then break my 5-day hiatus on Cogmind.

Triple Edit: Chris Christodolou, who did the OST for 'Risk of Rain', did an *amazing* job. Same with Darren Korb, who did the soundtracks for 'Bastion' and 'Transistor'. Oh my god that man is a musical deity. Also, Danny Baranowski's music made me buy Super Meat Boy for the soundtrack alone. Seriously - I heard the music and bought the game, and then found out it was an amazing game. And obligatory 'EVE Online' soundtrack shout-out. So good.

Wonderful! If I could wring you dry of all your tricksy formulas... ;)

But ack, you didn't really answer my last question. Or maybe I am just tremendously stupid. So do I get a 10% accuracy bonus for standing still for >2 turns? That is, I get a 10% penalty every time I move? Is that how I read it? Also, what is a turn? 100 units of time, or a turn turn?

48
Quote from: The Manual
Volley Modifiers:
  +3%/cell if range < 6
  +attacker utility bonuses
+10% if attacker didn't move for the last 2 turns
  +3% of defender heat
  +10%/+30% for large/huge targets
  +15% for hack-linked targets
  +5% w/robot analysis data
-1~15% if defender moved last turn, where faster = harder to hit
-10% if attacker moved last turn
  -3% of attacker heat
  -10%/-30% for small/tiny targets
  -10% if target is flying
  -defender utility bonuses

Citation needed? I'm not seeing the bonus for hovering.

Actually, there's a few things I'd like clarification on. If core movement is hover-based, does it still benefit from Maneuvering Thrusters and the like? For some reason I would think not, but it probably does. Also, this line:
-1~15% if defender moved last turn, where faster = harder to hit
How fast do you have to be moving to get that 15%? Likewise, where is the 1% cut-off?
And:
+10% if attacker didn't move for the last 2 turns
I'm stupid - does this mean I get a bonus if I haven't moved, or does it mean they get a bonus against me if I haven't moved?

49
Legs and treads are where its at for combat runs. Legs keep the decent movespeed, treads... well, everything moves seventy billion times every move you make, but you only need like three to carry the world. No balancing necessary. If I can make it to -1 on legs, so can you ;)
