Stories / I feel hollow
« on: June 05, 2015, 03:29:15 AM »
I should have died on Research -2. By a stroke of luck I found the stairs with less than 30 core life and an army hot on my heels. I had finally done it - I got a pure combat build to level -1, known as 'Access'. From the get-go, it was a never-ending stream of Programmers and Hunters, and yet somehow I managed to keep myself together and parts in most of my slots. (Related note: Plating is not common enough on that floor considering how frequent fights are. Or maybe it's just not strong enough - it never lasted more than a single fight.) After fighting 2 H-88 Terminators paired with 2 B-99 Colossi in a unique area, I found my reward: broken stairs. Armed with only a Multirail and Lgt. Ion Engines because those bastard Recyclers are omnipresent, I scraped myself back into shape again, defeating yet another wave of Programmers. Corruption is rising. My map is hopeless. I'm not stupid and I know when I've been somewhere already, but it makes analyzing what you have explored to try to deduce the right direction impossible. I ambled for another twenty minutes before getting in my last fateful fight - two Terminators accompanied by three Sages. That was it for me. Even three Adv. Targeting Computers aren't enough to help get a bead on Terminators - and it doesn't help they have tons of core life. Quickly stripped of everything I owned, I ran. I ran for another five minutes before finally succumbing, confused and cold and alone against seven traveling Plagues. At least I took half the bastards out before I dropped.

I spent 50 minutes on that bloody floor, 50 minutes of utter hopelessness. It took me an hour and a half to get to -1, and another hour just to die. My game lasted 8000~ turns, and 45% of them were on that accursed floor. When I spawned into Access, there were two directions I could have gone - north and south. I went south. I guess I should have gone north.

In every area, Materials, Factory, Research, Access, I had my items all wiped time and time again. I must've been burnt to naked over ten times only to claw my way back, saving my best parts in my inventory and trying again on the next floor, only to lose it all again, and again, and again. I wanted to quit so badly so many times but it just feels wrong to give in and hold 5, even though I know trying harder just makes losing more painful. As a matter of fact, I think I ascended naked more times than I did competent. Maybe it's not so surprising Arseface can get to -1 just running naked. Why am I even fighting when running is so much stronger? Oh yeah, that's right - score.

I think the real icing on the cake, though, is that I still didn't even set a new high score, let alone a personal high score. Did you know you don't get any points for that final ascension? My best is 10,910 and I didn't even make it past Factory on that run, but this time I was 10 points short of a new personal record. Kyzrati said that someone else has reached 14,000. I almost wonder if they exploited some strange mechanics. Score increases mostly from value destroyed - did they just nuke every stockpile they came across? Did they get a decent set-up somewhere on Factory and just camp the stairs, obliterating anything that came by for as long as possible? I have no idea.

Sorry for moping guys, this is just my way of coping. It was a good run. Here are some interesting items I found, because I owe something to anyone that read that lol

Exp. Anti-Grav System
Exp. Cooling System
Inertial Stasis Machine
Spectral Analyzer

Ideas / Inconsistent Movement Mechanics Re: NPCs
« on: June 04, 2015, 03:09:27 PM »
>> Exhibit A <<

We begin with frame 1. The scene is me waiting for some goblins that saw me a while ago to enter the doorway.

Frame 2. In the space of a single turn or 'wait' command, TWO goblins enter the room. Notice the turn count has only incremented by 1. What the heck?!

Frame 3. I have fired two volleys at the goblin in the doorway. Somehow, a new goblin manages to enter the room BEHIND ME. Notice the enemy name ticker indicating this is the first turn he's entered my vision. My theory is that they are treating their own movement like a flight unit, and he crossed over the doorway goblin AND myself to reach the corner square behind me. WHAT THE HECK?!

This kind of shit happens all the fuckin' time. This is just the most egregious case I've seen yet. My theory is that when enemies are in line-of-sight, they move "normally" with no hoppy bullshit, but when they are out of sight they cut corners and move over and through each other. This would explain why, when fighting in a narrow hallway, enemies do not leap over each other to get to me but instead head backwards and path to the other side of a hallway, or go find another doorway into the room. In other words, it seems like units think they can't fly, but in some cases attempt to move and the game treats it as if they can, much to their non-sentient bemusement I'm sure. I could be wrong about what causes this or how it happens.

Can something be done to change this kind of jackassery? Combat is infuriating enough - the ONLY way to control a fight is with the nearest 1-tile constrictor, but then sometimes this crap happens completely blowing all attempts at controlling the flow out of the water.

Unrelated note, but I just noticed there is a big black bar on the right side of my screenshots, meaning I have a problem with OBS... Sigh... Edit: Fixed. Huzzah! Maybe there still is a god.

General & Off-Topic / IRC?
« on: June 01, 2015, 12:30:14 PM »
I think I'm asking rhetorically, but are there any IRC channels we can use? I really like loitering in chat rooms and just chit-chatting with people as they come through. Also, refreshing the subreddit and forums every five minutes just isn't really the same, and I've been trying to reign in how much I post...

I believe... that when I took the shot, the Operator was a square away from the Terminal, but I might be wrong. He could have been adjacent to it. However, it doesn't seem right that my shots which disabled the Terminal did not prevent IT from using it. vOv

Ideas / Machine familiarity
« on: May 28, 2015, 05:20:59 AM »
Disclaimer: I'm not sure if this is really a bug, but I don't know where to ask.

Basically, I've noticed that my familiarity with Terminals keeps getting reset. I don't think I've ever seen it go past 5 or so. This is including use of a Imp. Footprint Analyzer, which should boost familiarity gain by 2. If there are arcane mechanics behind it, you don't necessarily have to explain how it works. If you'd prefer to keep us in the dark and let us figure it out ourselves, I'll understand :P I'm just not sure. Maybe it's reset on each floor, maybe it's per Terminal Security level, maybe I lose it every time I detach the Footprint Analyzer, maybe it's a bug. If it is, I can't even fathom what would be causing it - nearly every Terminal hack happens under unique circumstances.

Edit: Upon further inspection, I think the system is working correctly, I just don't know what that system is.

Yo. I'm creating this thread as an outlet for everyone to share tips they've learned the hard way. I'm not picky, just throw shit down as you come across it :P

I'm starting:
Impact weapons are the melee-equivalent of rocket launchers. They are really good at damaging small parts on enemies, so I thought to myself, "Hey! I'll use this POWER MAUL to really show those Programmers a thing or two!" Got in a scrap with 6 Sages, came out on top minus a few power cores, but... There was no salvage. There was nothing but matter and two unusable reactors. I laughed. I cried. And then I died.

Strategies / z << Manual Command
« on: May 24, 2015, 05:22:25 AM »
Hello all forum-goers,

I've just finished compiling and writing a mega list of all the manual commands I know. Unfortunately, I wrote it all up with 'Markdown' syntax because I had reddit in mind, so a straight-up copy-paste won't look very pretty. Also, that would double the amount of work I have to do to update it... So with that said, please forgive me for simply linking to it from this thread. If you really hate reddit, feel free to drop any useful information in this thread and I will see that it gets updated. If you really really hate reddit and refuse to even read it over there, I'm sorry.

z << Manual Command

Steps to reproduce:

- Bump into Repair Station
- Do NOT scan a part into the machine
- Manually enter 'Repair'
- Enjoy your wallpaper

I have auto-crash log uploading set to 'on' - let me know if you need me to manually post the crash log. I sent two - the second was me confirming. The game properly restored me to the beginning of that floor which was, fortunately, literally a room away. Phew! No harm no foul.

Ideas / Please stop sorting my attachments

Every time you ascend to a new level or save/quit/launch game, all of your currently equipped parts get shuffled by some maniacal logic. I haven't quite figured out how or why. Could this be a toggle in options, or perhaps simply not happen in the first place? I wouldn't mind so much, but as a person who relies 90% on Utilities, I like having them organized by use and I keep having to shuffle them with Ctrl-Shift-Key.

Descriptive title is descriptive.

Steps to reproduce:
- Be in Keyboard Mode (F2 toggle)
- Alt-tab out of game
- Try to move your mouse
- cry

Or at least, that's what happens to me :P Toggling out of F2 fixes the cursor lock.
Unrelated note: Alt-F4 to save/quit is the slickest thing ever.

Stories / Stealth Run

Just pooled a bunch of screenshots and wrote in the story on imgur - check out this run. I made it all the way to -1 :D

Minor note - how the heck does this forum code work? I can't figure out how to embed that link in the text because I'm dumb.
Also, obligatory 'First'.
