This had me instantly thinking of XcomRL ;)
Hah, wow that is super cool. And I can see how it would get you thinking in that direction :)
Regarding the geoscape, I was planning to go with a flat map since it's both easier from a strategic observation point of view, and also won't result in coding nightmares :P. (Though we would lose the nice "Earth is actually a spheroid" effect...)
Good old mockups

Neat find!
Oh god, the source code is genius.
XcomRl?
The [playable and fun but incomplete] game I made before Cogmind (http://xcomrl.blogspot.com/), which eventually became Cogmind itself after much tweaking.
I checked it out, but the game is too difficult, usually just end up with a guy hiding
Is there a manual?
It's pre-alpha, so the game never made it to the stage of having a manual :P. It assumes familiarity with the original UFO Defense on which it's based, as well as the blog posts where I talk about other unique features I added and how to use them. It's quite challenging, but once you understand the mechanics and devise relevant tactics it's not unreasonably hard--winning is common.
Ok
