Let me know when you have something going.  I'll guinea pig it.

Interested to learn what you mean by ladder project. Some sort of competitive league?

Boy, you're going to make me jog my memory here.  I think it worked something like this.
  • It was tiered by experience level (bronze, silver, gold, platinum, master) something like that.
  • You could join any level (except master) that you thought matched your ability.
  • You'd get to play 1 game per week for as long a season lasted.  That game would be scored and count toward your ladder ranking.  If you died early on.  Too bad.  Wait until the next week.  You could play a game that spanned multiple weeks if you wanted, but you'd only get credit for the week you started in, and you'd miss out on the weeks you overran.
  • Games would be scored on a variety of things.  Somewhat similar to the tournament scene.
  • After the season ended it would run some calculations and possibly move you up or down a league based on your performance.  Master level was only attainable by being slotted up from platinum.

Edit:  https://github.com/jrmitch120/CrawlLeague.  Looks like this is it ;)  Been a while though...

I was working on a DCSS ladder project a while back, but lost steam.  It was pretty awesome.  I should revisit it ;)

The inaugural Alpha 8 run has ended, so I can visit this thread.

Argh!! ;D

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

How do you get out?  The terminal was a 5% hack.  On the behemoth side, I couldn't shoot through.

I made it to Zhirov and found some new cave content.  I'm loving the story, like Sherlockkat.  I can't wait to read some more.

I've been participating in the DCSS bi-annual tournament for a few years now.  It's been quite a bit of fun.

This year, my normal team has a bit of overflow, and I'm thinking of setting up a supplemental team with Cogminders.

Would anybody be interested?  You can find more information here.

I know zxc has played a little  ;D

I have an Alpha 8 play through going if you care to follow along.

Exploring Alpha 8!

Starting with episode 3, I'll begin exploring the Upper Caves, looking for exciting new content!

Ideas / Re: Level Map

Ahh.  Interesting points.  Probably not worth it when you lay it out like that.

On the dump command, my initial reaction was that I wouldn't use it, but it could be fun when dissecting seed runs and the like.  I personally wouldn't use it while playing.

Ideas / Level Map
« on: April 05, 2016, 07:24:14 PM »
Inspired by this.

It would be cool, if technically feasible, to pull up a map in this style (FOV preserved) to view the explored area at a glance.

That's one hell of a score there. You topped the charts.

Yeah, until Decker decided to quit running around with wheels and auto-guns.

For this week's run I tried to get me some friends, since 1 is the loneliest number.  To that aim, I went to storage and picked up a couple buddies.  Recycling proved to be unfruitful this time around in terms of allies.  However, I did actually manage to fabricate a few grunts along the way.  Caves (on -4!?) also provided a couple short lived buds.

On that note.... the caves are a real pain when entering from -4.  The spawns are tough and they're in packs.  On the bright side, I was finding all of this juicy research intel.  That's pretty awesome, because research is impossible for mere mortals.

I found an exit in caves, which lead to.... more caves.  That level proved to be my undoing.  I searched the entire map only to find an entrance to Warlord.  Unfortunately I must have missed the exit in some small nook.  Meandering around the map found me a couple of ARCS loaded with pests.  They proved to be too much for my battered Cogmind to handle.  Anything else and I could have dropped my drawers and outrun them, but not the pests.

Until next week.

Weekly Seed #34 Playlist

Windows 10 decided to install itself this week and it jacked up my mic.  Bad new is, I didn't notice it until after I finished the episode.  So, you'll have to do without my "expert" advice and commentary for the first episode.  Good news is, I made it to a second episode.  Enjoy! ...or not ;)

- Episode 1: Materials, Storage, Recycling, Factory.
- Episode 2: Red Alert, Caves, Crapton-o-dudes, Death.

That's one hell of a score there. You topped the charts. Really heavy on the EM (look out for Programmers!). I see you passed through the Cetus--for the gear?

I think this clip explains the EM.  Had 0 weapons and ran into a run filled with them ;).  It got so bad that I was running around with auto-guns on sections of -4 and -3.

Cetus supplied a bit of the gear.  Nice place to get armor from the guards.  I launched them in my run, so I probably didn't get as much as I could, but then again, they didn't pound me as much as they could.  Being my second time there, I accidentally took an exit out, otherwise I would have explored it further.

I think I actually manufactured a set of the regenerative armor.  I was trying to do the same with the combat drone, but couldn't find a fab that was fab enough to build it.

Ensuring that each fab has a limited number of uses would prevent abuses.

The time constraint is also good, but it should be implemented properly. Waiting around doing nothing is boring. Instead, modify the food clock directly.

I like the limited uses idea to prevent abuse.  I also agree in principle with the destructive matter container idea, but in practice, I think that'd tick me off too ;)  I love matter containers once I actually start carrying them around.

In matter critical situations, I call it Ghost Busting™.  Throw it on the floor and step on it to unleash the whoopass.

I'll throw my 2 cents in on the fabrication front.

Right now I think it is too difficult to be worth the trouble.

  • You have to acquire a schematic worth building.
  • You have to get a storage unit full of matter.
  • You have to load the schematic.  This can fail.
  • You have to build the part.  This can fail.
  • Your machine may not be advanced enough to build the part.
  • You have to wait until the part is complete.

Thoughts:

Does loading/building need to be 2 separate hack attempts?

I personally kind of like the concept of needing a matter storage unit.  I think it makes thematic sense and requires the player to make a conscience effort to become a builder.

I love the idea of removing the machine capability check.  That would be a huge step I think.  This has stuffed me on many occasions.

Waiting is a pain, but I can see how it's important in terms of game mechanics.  I'm not really sure how to address that.  Maybe auto-advance the clock instead of making the player wait.

Quit a long circuitous run, but in the end, Researched™.

I'd love to see somebody post a YouTube video of a winning combat play through.  For me, Research (in combat mode) seems almost impossible to get through without entering "run for your life" mode.  The difficulty feels like 3x the Factory levels.

Other than that, the new content feels really interesting.  I had to leave the Proximity Caves early, so I'll have to revisit that again.

Additionally, I acquired plans to build a combat drone bay along with some other cool stuff in Data Miner.  I couldn't find a Fabricator capable of building it until it was too late, so I'll have to try to get it again.  I want to see that thing in action.  Regenerative armor!  I'm not sure if that stuff is new, but it certainly is awesome.

Btw, I saw your playthrough thro extension. You can blow through those prison doors if the hacks fail. Be careful though. They send demolishers after you if your army gets too big. I have had 15+ allies and they weren't too happy with me. You also don't have to engage the behemoths along that narrow 1-tile corridor. It might be worth it go back to the start of the level and take the long corridor heading east. That takes you to the behemoths and you can engage in a wider space along with your allies instead of having to shoot through them in that tight corridor. I also think that it is better to take those behemoths out before free you any of the allies. This is because I like to keep 07 alive in Cetus and you need a considerable force of allies in order to protect 07 from the Cetus guards. Better not to lose them to those behemoths and sentries.

Good advice.  I shall try it out on my next trip there.

Speaking of spoilery story stuff...

Does the mainframe in Cetus do anything?  It seems too central a prop piece to be inconsequential.  I blew it up and it didn't seem to do anything perceptible outside of sending a lot of guys at me.

There is a terminal near the mainframe that doesn't seem to do anything besides allowing a manual hack.  That might be a key to something.  Is that active, or the key to something interesting?  ;) [See here]

Can you use the Data Miner's hack yet?  Ie., is it defiantly "irrelevant if God Mode is not in the game yet".

Do the spotters in Recycling do anything?  Cool animation, but I did seem to realize anything beyond that.

I haven't read the weekly seed thread yet since I want to play it myself, but I presumed Enno destroyed the conduit because I saw his death location on the leaderboards ;).

That's pretty funny.  I got into Data Miner after I saw that on the score board.  I was thinking how on earth did he die there?  So, I shot the conduit while standing next to the stairs and found out how ;).

From the scoreboard:

Enno   -7/Data Miner 9887

Hmmmmm.. ;)

Here we go again!  Into the Caves.

Weekly Seed #33 Playlist

So far, I'd say my ideal kit for jumping into the caves is:
  • 1x/2x Large Storage Units.  Need to bring in replacement parts to handle the fizzling part mechanic.
  • Launcher.  Absolutely required.  The combination of large enemy groups and wide open spaces makes a launched imperative.
  • Sensor Array + Signal Interpreter (optional).  Helps avoid unnecessary large scale confrontations.  Also has a supplemental use ;)
  • 3x weapon slots.  I feel that this is a good number of weapons to handle the resistance I've found so far.

Fixed Bugs & Non-Bugs / Cetus Auto Ascend
« on: March 23, 2016, 11:46:00 PM »
This may not actually be a bug, but I have auto-ascend turned on and stepping onto the Cetus entrance didn't automatically transfer me to the area.  I spent some time thinking there was something else I needed to do to activate the door, but all that was required was '>'.

Caves is also more tactically challenging. I am starting to feel that explosives are a must if you are going down there.

I've only had 1 Cave run, so take this analysis with a grain of salt.  Both lower/upper cave entrances spawned with a welcoming party of 3 or 4 combots.  Without a launcher, I would have taken a lot of damage.  For me, a launcher seems to be pretty vital as well.

Caves difficulty : Caves does feel a bit like mines. So, not exactly easy mode all the time.

I ended up fleeing the upper caves stark naked.  Granted I poked my head just about everywhere I could.  There was even a behemoth in my cave, although I managed to not engage.

The expiring loot mechanic is the root of this I think.  If I could replenish parts, I don't think I would have had as much of an issue.  As it stands, I think there is little chance that an experienced player will actually die here.  If you shed all of your equipment, it's pretty easy to use the cave layout to avoid your would be attackers.  You'll just die when you get back to factory ;)

With knowledge of how loot expiration works down there, I think you can go into battle in such a way that you can snatch stuff up before it fizzles.  I'll have to see.

Other stuff:
Hunters are back to being scary. I think I am going to start running purely thermal/em builds from now on. Fighting against hunters with kinetics is just hopeless and I have lost a lot of good runs to them.

Yeah, I hate these guys.  I had a run where I was deck(er)ed out with 7-8 slots of high quality armor and kinetic weapons.  An arc of these guys unloaded on me (-2) and just tore me to sheds.  And that was before the buff!
