I've played a ton more games since posting this, and have yet to encounter this again.

It might require some obscure conditions.  As I recall I had an ally at the time.  He may have died out of my field of view and in the general direction of the stairs.

Yes.  The factory exit was found and worked as usual.  The run is still going.  I'll attach the score sheet after I complete the run.

In the lower caves I came across a stairway that was indicated as such by the HUD auto-highlight, but no staircase (<) was visible on the map.  Likewise I could not auto-ascend or manually ascend on the give space.

Never had allies in tow before? :P

When adjacent to an exit, if you have any allies following you (regardless of where they're located), it highlights an area around the exit. That's the area in which allies will follow when you leave. Any beyond that will be left behind.

They were right next to me.  I'll see if I can reproduce next time I'm in there.  This particular run I wasn't recording, so I don't have anything concrete to share.

Yes it's intended. In that case you'd evolve 4 times at once (gaining 8 slots and all the other benefits you missed) when you get back to the main branch--you just have to be able to reach it ;)

This sort of "multi-evolution" has been in the game for a while, but most players haven't visited the once place where it was possible. This new shortcut was just added, to give players access to Zion and its new features.

Ahh right, you need to get back to the main branch.  Like a trip through storage -> recycling.

That said, you apparently did not fully explore Zion, either, because there are friends there who will help escort you back through the caves!

Hmm I found those fellows the "M"'s I believe.  They followed me around Zion, but didn't pop up the stairs with me when I ascended to the prox caves.  Did I need to something specific to enable the escort?

In my first a13 run, something *unexpected* happened. I was on -10 and found an entrance to the Mines. Since there is more interesting stuff there now, I said "why the heck not?" and dove in. In there, I met a derelic robot who said I could follow him to a safe place. I took his hidden stair and ended up in Zion (-6). Upon exiting Zion, I ended up somewhere (not Materials but I do no know where) on -5.

I'm not sure that's intended.  I can't think of any reason you'd actually want to skip those evolutions unless you really want to make the game hard.

Probably related, why do light engines produce more power than not light engines?  Why would I ever not use light engines unless I was absolutely loaded down with lasers?


This isn't entirely accurate.  Have a look at the power source table on the wiki:

Outside of Lgt Ion Engines, the other Lgt versions are inferior in both integrity and storage.  Having a reserve of 200 power vs 50 power is a big deal for combat builds.  Speed runners are usually more concerned about the extra weight.  Supply is equivalent when comparing identical classes of engines.

I'm finally done.

Pretty insane finish.  I made it to Access completely loaded.  22/22 inventory, 4 launchers, heavy armor, hacking, drones, etc.  I could not find the exit...  until I found it on my very last move and then got shot in the face (butt?).  It happened so fast that I had to watch it on replay.

Video uploading to the playlist now.

I feel that my play degraded under the constant pressure.

Nice score though.  It would have landed me second behind Decker's insane 52k.

On a side note, this run made me respect EM launchers.  I had a Tesla Bomb launcher that was an absolute beast for the last 2 levels.

On to Alpha 9!

I just ascended to -6 and did an immediate stats "s".  My mass was displayed as 763/84.  After closing the window and re-opening, the mass was reported correctly.

I'm a little behind on running this weeks seed, but it's going down.  Currently on -6 with a trip through the caves.

On a side note, Prox. Caves seem to be really deadly.  I'd like to explore them a bit, but I usually have to bail due to getting my butt kicked.  Is there anything worth looking for in there, or just find the exit and get out?

You can kill the data miner in a single shot. I katana-sliced him to death. He drops his hackware, system-mapper. It gives you +30 to hack!!

I had planned on heading into the caves with a combat build, but I made a critical mistake.  I didn't find the storage unit cache, and as a result I was stuck with an inventory of 4 for the entire run.

I made the decision to forgo the caves because I knew I wouldn't be able to survive the part attrition. 

As I continued on, I still didn't find a storage unit and was too committed to combat to effectively switch to stealth.  I died eventually due to the lack of spare parts.

I would rank DCSS in my top 10 games of all time.  After Cogmind reaches 1.0, it may not be far behind.

Cogmind is grand fun, but a very different game from DCSS.  As Kyzrati mentioned, check out some let's plays.  They'll go a long way in helping you determine if this game is right for you.

I would also like to mention that the visuals for Cogmind are the best of any "true" Roguelike that's available.  It's akin to a work of art in some respects.  As you first begin to experience the game, there will be a few moments where you'll just look at your screen with your mouth agape.

I know there has been some griping over the price, but there is supreme value for your dollar here.  In hindsight I would have paid $100 for this game.  I want to see Cogmind 2.

A new type of propulsion that allows you to move at a speed of 100 for 5 turns. 

After this point there is a 33% chance that, on each subsequent move, your Cogmind falls over and breaks something.
