'F' always autolocks onto the last target you were shooting on, so I don't see why that'd be a problem vOv

You know, I thought it was funny that I didn't get points for the final ascension, but I guess I'm just daft because I never considered it was a bug... I just that it was a strange decision. Like I've said before: I'm dumb.

So, because I know it bugs you I actually looked into that 14,000 score sheet, and apparently they were cheating, so that one doesn't count. Right now the highest legitimate scores are a few around 10k. Your latest run could possibly be the highest at present, though I have no automation set up so I can't be sure.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? Cheating?! How? Why?!? Actually, before I beat the game, I did entertain thoughts of abusing known bugs and whatnot to help my runs, but I would absolutely die inside if I did that. Like.... I wouldn't feel right for the rest of my life dun dun duuuuun. I have also wondered if it's possibly to modify the log that gets uploaded, but I'm not tech-savvy enough to do that and it sounds borderline-malicious. I can promise I only entertained thoughts of sending silly logs though :P

I do kind of worry about something, though: Leaderboards. I know people keep going on about them, but every game's leaderboard I've ever seen was just filled with bogus scores. I guess maybe we have the benefit of being a small community, but it isn't exactly tiny. Kyzrati will know the numbers best, but I'm fairly sure over a thousand people have bought Alpha access, perhaps significantly more. Moderating a leaderboard is hard and methods to falsify logs will get elaborate, I'm sure.

THANKS FOR PUTTING UP WITH ME GUYS. Everything feels not-so-bad after a good sleep.

I should have died on Research -2. By a stroke of luck I found the stairs with less than 30 core life and an army hot on my heels. I had finally done it - I got a pure combat build to level -1, known as 'Access'. From the get-go, it was a never-ending stream of Programmers and Hunters, and yet somehow I managed to keep myself together and parts in most of my slots. (Related note: Plating is not common enough on that floor considering how frequent fights are. Or maybe it's just not strong enough - it never lasted more than a single fight.) After fighting 2 H-88 Terminators paired with 2 B-99 Colossi in a unique area, I found my reward: broken stairs. Armed with only a Multirail and Lgt. Ion Engines because those bastard Recyclers are omnipresent, I scraped myself back into shape again, defeating yet another wave of Programmers. Corruption is rising. My map is hopeless. I'm not stupid and I know when I've been somewhere already, but it makes analyzing what you have explored to try to deduce the right direction impossible. I ambled for another twenty minutes before getting in my last fateful fight - two Terminators accompanied by three Sages. That was it for me. Even three Adv. Targeting Computers aren't enough to help get a bead on Terminators - and it doesn't help they have tons of core life. Quickly stripped of everything I owned, I ran. I ran for another five minutes before finally succumbing, confused and cold and alone against seven traveling Plagues. At least I took half the bastards out before I dropped.

I spent 50 minutes on that bloody floor, 50 minutes of utter hopelessness. It took me an hour and a half to get to -1, and another hour just to die. My game lasted 8000~ turns, and 45% of them were on that accursed floor. When I spawned into Access, there were two directions I could have gone - north and south. I went south. I guess I should have gone north.

In every area, Materials, Factory, Research, Access, I had my items all wiped time and time again. I must've been burnt to naked over ten times only to claw my way back, saving my best parts in my inventory and trying again on the next floor, only to lose it all again, and again, and again. I wanted to quit so badly so many times but it just feels wrong to give in and hold 5, even though I know trying harder just makes losing more painful. As a matter of fact, I think I ascended naked more times than I did competent. Maybe it's not so surprising Arseface can get to -1 just running naked. Why am I even fighting when running is so much stronger? Oh yeah, that's right - score.

I think the real icing on the cake, though, is that I still didn't even set a new high score, let alone a personal high score. Did you know you don't get any points for that final ascension? My best is 10,910 and I didn't even make it past Factory on that run, but this time I was 10 points short of a new personal record. Kyzrati said that someone else has reached 14,000. I almost wonder if they exploited some strange mechanics. Score increases mostly from value destroyed - did they just nuke every stockpile they came across? Did they get a decent set-up somewhere on Factory and just camp the stairs, obliterating anything that came by for as long as possible? I have no idea.

Sorry for moping guys, this is just my way of coping. It was a good run. Here are some interesting items I found, because I owe something to anyone that read that lol

Exp. Anti-Grav System
Exp. Cooling System
Inertial Stasis Machine
Spectral Analyzer

Ideas / Inconsistent Movement Mechanics Re: NPCs
« on: June 04, 2015, 03:09:27 PM »
>> Exhibit A <<

We begin with frame 1. The scene is me waiting for some goblins that saw me a while ago to enter the doorway.

Frame 2. In the space of a single turn or 'wait' command, TWO goblins enter the room. Notice the turn count has only incremented by 1. What the heck?!

Frame 3. I have fired two volleys at the goblin in the doorway. Somehow, a new goblin manages to enter the room BEHIND ME. Notice the enemy name ticker indicating this is the first turn he's entered my vision. My theory is that they are treating their own movement like a flight unit, and he crossed over the doorway goblin AND myself to reach the corner square behind me. WHAT THE HECK?!

This kind of shit happens all the fuckin' time. This is just the most egregious case I've seen yet. My theory is that when enemies are in line-of-sight, they move "normally" with no hoppy bullshit, but when they are out of sight they cut corners and move over and through each other. This would explain why, when fighting in a narrow hallway, enemies do not leap over each other to get to me but instead head backwards and path to the other side of a hallway, or go find another doorway into the room. In other words, it seems like units think they can't fly, but in some cases attempt to move and the game treats it as if they can, much to their non-sentient bemusement I'm sure. I could be wrong about what causes this or how it happens.

Can something be done to change this kind of jackassery? Combat is infuriating enough - the ONLY way to control a fight is with the nearest 1-tile constrictor, but then sometimes this crap happens completely blowing all attempts at controlling the flow out of the water.

Unrelated note, but I just noticed there is a big black bar on the right side of my screenshots, meaning I have a problem with OBS... Sigh... Edit: Fixed. Huzzah! Maybe there still is a god.

I'd give you some cool .xp files of my own, but they're all in a special version of REXPaint that I use which isn't compatible with everyone else's...
Ha! I figured you'd done something like that. I tried plugging the Cogmind stuff into REXP recently. Unfortunately, the alien parts did not load ;)

There's a thread right below this one for stuff people have made :3

Unless you mean the original .xp files?

Oh yeah, also - most of the people seem to be hanging out on freenode. Forget what I said about quakenet, just use freenode.

Edit: What I meant to say was, I look forward to seeing you there! I've been hanging out 24/7, but more people need to stop by. Not that Arseface isn't good enough for me, heh.

I realized how it worked after deleting my config to refresh everything. You're right though, I didn't realize at first that I had to lower the map size to gain access to the options - my poor memory lead me to believe it was around 87~ when it was actually 78.

I had some trouble with the setting earlier today, actually, in this regard. After going from fullscreen to windowed and a font size smaller, I was not able to select font size 18 upon resuming fullscreen.

One thing to note is that you can manually set the map height and width in the config file. This is not ideal, of course.

Don't worry! This is a known issue :>

I'll be there! I just installed Pidgin and joined #cogmind. For anyone else who wants to hang out, you can connect to quakenet with any IRC client using the address irc.quakenet.org and joining the channel #cogmind. I hope I see some of you regulars! :D

I think I'm asking rhetorically, but are there any IRC channels we can use? I really like loitering in chat rooms and just chit-chatting with people as they come through. Also, refreshing the subreddit and forums every five minutes just isn't really the same, and I've been trying to reign in how much I post...

If you get an opportunity, could you try and scan some of those unique enemies that show up when you cause too much trouble? I'm sure you've seen the Protectors and Saboteurs by now, and probably even something new I'm not aware of. If you get an Adv. Scan Processor, that is. I'll pay good karma for screenshots!

As far as I know, the game is not very rebind-friendly. I think you might be without a paddle for a while. Sorry :( I know there's software out there you can use to modify your keyboard layout, probably even temporarily.

Quantification is important in my books. I can support something like 'You Are Winrar' because it's easy to define when someone has won, but 'Hacker Extraordinaire' and such are harder. Why not just use the personal line on your profile? Heck, you could even take it to the next level and change your icon to that of the Decryption Engine (an in-game item that increases hacking success by 25%!).

Strategies / Re: Matter Storage Units

There's no way, unfortunately. I think the best you can do is connect it to yourself to add its supply to your own, and then disconnect it.

Stories / Re: Challanging level
« on: May 30, 2015, 07:21:06 PM »
I have a similar screenshot stashed somewhere. In my experience, this only happens on Materials levels, and the close stairs are only ever to Mines or Storage. I don't trust close stairs. This also holds true on Factory - if you find early stairs, 85% it's a broken staircase.

« on: May 30, 2015, 05:21:46 PM »
Haha, check my thread in Stories. It's got a screencap of the victory screen and I uploaded a pastebin of the score log :P

You're right, stealth runs are generally really low scoring. 95% of my points came from simply ascending floors (500 per). However, I am starting to de-stress and do shooty-shooty runs and I just got a high score of 10,910. I only made it to -3 though.

I never use Rocket or 'Nade Launchers unless I'm forced. I hate how they destroy all the salvage. If I have to use AoE weapons, I'll go with an EM bomb of some sort.

Fun facts: On my winning stealth run, it took me an hour to get to Research (-3), and then another hour to get through it to -1. Research is a real pain!
On my first real run-n-gun attempt, it took me two hours to get TO Research.

Mmmm, I think the beauty of the game is that you can play it however you'd like. I just made it to -3 on my first serious run-n-gun attempt, so I would hardly say that hacking is necessary. It's just an accessory to a different style of play.
