Strategies / Re: Allies
« on: May 27, 2015, 07:05:57 PM »
I stumbled across about about 6 Drone Bays in a room while being chased and on my final legs by 15+ Hunters/Programmers/Sentries.  I ended up releasing about 10 drones which acted as a distraction so I could just make it to the stairs.  It was a pretty epic getaway :D

I think this was on level -5.
Drone bays are always fun - I love running into them in the DSU vaults, because I can just hide in there while I release a bunch to go exploring for me, and by the time the last set is launched the first sets will have found something.

Currently, dropping storage units works in a fairly bizarre way.  If your inventory is full, both it and any overflow from your now-empty inventory are thrown on the ground normally.  If your inventory can, after removal of the storage unit fit that same unit, it moves it into inventory as expected.  However, if your inventory is not full but would overflow if the unit were removed, you can't drop it - there's a message saying that "Inventory capacity will be insufficient."

I'd suggest making it so that dropping a unit does it whatever the state of your inventory - if possible, with a confirmation repress.  If you don't want that, never letting you do it if capacity would be insufficient would work as well, but right now with it depending on just how overfull the inventory would be seems like a problem.

To reproduce:  Open a new game and kill the scrapyard scavenger until it gives you a storage unit.  Equip that, and try unequipping it with 3, 4, 5, and 6 items in inventory.  It should succeed, fail, fail, succeed, respectively.

General Discussion / Re: Early Alpha Impressions!

That just causes the id's to blink on and off repeatedly for me.
Oh, you're right - I had thought it kept them up.

I wish there was a toggle for item names.  I cant read all the items on the floor fast enough when pressing 3 once.  Specially when there is lots of loots on the ground.
You can just hold 3.

gently glow, kind of like the effect used on broken stairs

Wait, what's a broken stairs? I just fought a defender off something that looked like a stairs and as I enetered it said something along the lines "Some branches are not implemented in alpha". Is that a broken stairs? If yes, I do not recall seeing it glowing (ascii mode).
It's not a glow so much as a subtle shimmer; that's going to be made more obvious in the next release.

Strategies / Matter Storage Units
« on: May 23, 2015, 06:36:47 PM »
Turns out you don't need to mount them; just keep them in your inventory and they'll fill up with matter from the ground.  Not sure if it's intended behaviour, but it's big; I was always missing either the utility slot or the support to bother with them (and therefore fabricators) before.  This may be common knowledge, but it's definitely something people should be aware of.

I haven't reproduced it, but I think that ramming or jumping onto level stairs also doesn't trigger the level end.

I try to find a 1-tile corridor, and settle for a doorway or even corner if there isn't one; unless I'm at least Fast x2, running never seems to work out, just get me shot and increase the number of chasers.

Strategies / Re: To Evolve or to Explore?
« on: May 21, 2015, 11:03:19 AM »
I pretty much always try to evolve as soon as possible, exploring only the rooms right around level stairs once they're found.  Which slots I level depends, but it's pretty much always 1 or 2 propulsion within the first few levels.

How did you manage to get into a stealth setup?  I can't seem to make it through the first few levels without getting in a lot of fights, and so have to keep taking a lot of combat parts to make it through.

I always try to play stealthy, but haven't managed to get very far with it more than once - I always seem to get in a fight I can't avoid and draw all sorts of attention, and then be forced to go shooty.

If you hit f1 to bring up the menu, there's a tab with settings and you can set fontsize in the top left of that.

Ideas / Scavengers imba, nerf pl0x
« on: May 19, 2015, 10:46:11 AM »
Would it be possible to make scavengers avoid gunfire if it's not aimed at them?  Right now they'll run right through a battle picking up all the parts left behind.  This means that a lot of times, especially in larger fights, there'll be no useful salvage left at all, and just shooting them isn't really an option since that takes away from the time spent shooting immediate threats.  They're a huge pain, and unless that's an intended behaviour to reduce item access or something I don't see a point to it.

No, there was definitely stuff in the log; not sure how, but I must have somehow emptied it out before uploading it  :-\  I remember it was an Access Violation, with an 18-deep stack trace if that helps at all.

To start off, I'm playing on Linux under Wine.

I was in the factory, and had just picked up an item (the Precision Assault Rifle).  I inspected it to see how it compared to my other guns, but either before closing the inspection window or as soon as I pressed the key to do so, the game froze and had to be killed.

No idea how to reproduce; unless it's some problem with the Precision Assault Rifle data I can't think of anything else out of the ordinary about the situation - I had used that window many times with no problem, and doing so now causes no problems.

General & Off-Topic / Re: Introduce Yourself!

I'm Draxis from Bay 12, or Dessard pretty everywhere else.  Been around since one of the X@COM ARRP releases (2011 maybe?), and following Cogmind since it first came out.  Pretty excited to play it.

Don't really play many other roguelikes, though I've beaten DoomRL a few times; pretty much just play rhythm games, K-ShootMANIA and Osu, and the odd strategy game.

It's a bit sad that smf doesn't assign each user a number from zero like some forums  :V
