Today, I did the double-challenge run for this seed, using Unstable Evolution and Scavenger. Here's what I think of them so far:

The scavenger mode makes it a pretty straight-forward run. Since there's little loot, I just take the stairs asap. My build is also overall weaker since most of my parts are from enemy's loots. (e.g. basic lasers and legs) And even when I find a cool gear, it's already badly damaged, so it has limited use. (Now that I think of it, where are all the repair stations??) Thus, my gears got churned pretty quickly, and I need to constantly look for more replacements.

Unfortunately, that's not the worst part. The worst is the Unstable Evolution!

After 4 evolutions, my slots are 5 power, 4 propulsion, 3 utility, 3 weapon. What??  :o

So what ended up happening is that I have a bunch of utilities but I can't use them all! Can't equip heat sink, armor, storage unit, targeting computer, hackware, all at once. :(
(With a storage unit, I effectively have 2 utility slots to use!)

And what can I do with 5 power slots? The only thing I can think of is to use them for force field, but I can't find one! So I essentially use the extra power slots as an alternative shield to absorb damage, but it turns out that I lose them pretty quickly (due to their lack of integrity).

That was unfortunate. I didn't last very long with this messy combat build. I visited a Data Miner and after that, things went downward in the following proximity cave. (Oh I hate that place!) I got caught by a Warden, followed by an army of fighters, and just when I thought I can survive, an ARC came by and deployed grunts and imp at me...  :'(

Whoa, so you tell me, that it is actually possible to break through blast doors and reinforced barriers?!

I heard it's theoretically possible to break any tile, but you need some serious damage output to pull that off (possibly with overloaded weapon).

...And also the one in Zion who always try to give me a free Storm Laser, but I've never get to see its stats. (It's like the only time I get to encounter him is when I'm going for flight build) :(

I intended to venture into the deepest cave (which I think I know where it is), but I ended up at Data Miner instead. I've never been there before so I had to check it out.

Some thoughts about Data Miner, so spoiler ahead:

After entering the Proximity Cave, things went downward really fast. I was playing as a combat-build Cogmind with sensor array. But after losing the sensor (during a fight), it became hard for me to decide which route is safe or not. Eventually, I accidentally opened a hidden door leading to a sentry and awakened bots. The sentry then called in for reinforcement, and soon, I was surrounded by 10+ enemies in the open! I lost all my guns and cannons in an attempt to kill off the melee enemies (they're so sturdy!) so I had to pull out my missiles to destroy them at point-blank range. At the end, I was left with only an axe as my weapon and little health. After encountering a group of pests (again!), it was all over. It's just impossible to outrun them. :(

P.S. If you're holding a melee weapon, bumping to an unpowered robot (in the cave) will attack it by default instead of rewiring it. Would it be better to rewire it instead by default?

BTW, sometimes I see extermination commands in the Materials terminals. Might be a good idea to eliminate them. I also some security level 2 terminal as well, on -10 Material! Is that even possible?

It would be nice to be able to differentiate the unidentified artifacts in some way. Otherwise, I wouldn't want to autosort!

Assigning them different numbers would work, but it might seem weird to see AA04 and AA07 without first seeing AA01. It would be better to assign them number only when you see it first, but I'm not sure if it's difficult to program like that.

Then Scanalyzers became capable of at least identifying anything

If a scanalyzer can do that, can component analysis suite do that too?

When you examine an item's property (right-clicking an item), and then try to swap an equipment (Ctrl-right click), when you hover your mouse over a listed item, it will not highlight it. Instead it highlights the stat from the item's property box. (For example, in the following screenshot, I hover my mouse over Lgt. Assault Rifle to be swapped, but the Integrity value of Particle Gun was highlighted instead.)

Hm, a pretty good point, although I dunno. While it makes total sense from a gameplay mechanics perspective, it also doesn't fit in thematically, not to mention the current behavior kind of acts as a "price to pay" for getting to drop everything in a single turn to give you a chance to quickly escape. Well, I guess you also pay a price simply because you're dropping useful stuff, but... this is an extra price :P

It's a pretty steep price if you're at the higher floor since it takes a lot of time to rebuild yourself, but I can imagine it's still possible to win. And now that you mentioned about the thematic perspective, it probably makes more sense to keep it unchanged. Otherwise, it wouldn't be called "Go Naked", though you can rename it to "Go Weightless" or "Go Unburdened" (though they don't sound that good).

Definitely hyped up for the next update! As for this run, it didn't go very well. :P

I was trying out combat build this time but with a bit of hacking suite. I thought it's a good concept because with a load of storage units, you'll have plenty of backup weapons, and with hacking suite, you'll find the exit and control the alert level more easily. With just 3 hacking suite, I got to find whatever schematics I want (adv. hacking suite, weapon cycler, adv. force field, energy well, etc.), and fabricate with high percentage rate.  :D

One of the problems is that I forgot to upgrade my power slot. I ran out of energy pretty quickly with energy weapons! And when I switched over to kinetic weapons, I ran out of matter! And as if that's not enough, my stray shots kept hitting those engineers which kept calling for reinforcements after reinforcements. I think they called out 3-4 times in a row. By that point, I was like, "I should've went into a room to fight instead of the hallway!"

And then the final nail to my coffin: Not going naked early enough. I waited until I had ~200 health left before I started to run. And that was when a huge mob of enemies was already surrounding me, so I couldn't run far enough before I died by the hunters. It's a little sad that I fell apart too early, but it was fun trying out something a bit new.

P.S. Can the "Go Naked" command (Shift+Alt+P) not strip off equipments like propulsions and processors? They don't use up any mass, so they can at least provide some protection while running away.

when you're dealing with 2 or more it gets absurdly hard.

The game is definitely hard if there are 5 bots shooting at you, but you can avoid this situation if you fight at choke points or at doorways. That way, you'll only be facing one at a time, making it much easier to handle.

A lot of people who also have similar problem found good tips like here.

So I was having a good run last time which includes getting special codes from NPCs to be used when hacking. And I was like, "Yes! I can finally use them!" The only problem is....I tend to forget to use it! If I was playing the whole run in one sitting, I probably wouldn't have such  problem. But if I'm playing in multiple sessions (sometimes over a long period of time), I forget very easily. It was only until I look back at the scoresheet after finishing a run when I realized it.

So I was thinking if it's ok to make the manual command stand out a bit if I have a special code, maybe making it flash or giving it a different color, at least when starting a new session. I think that should make it easier to remember.

That said, you may have missed the part where I mentioned that players only appear on the leaderboard for which they have most recently played. So being on a lower board means your other scores won't appear on higher ones!

Yeah, I missed that part. Your blogs are just wayyyyy too informative for a small brain like mine. ;)


By the way, have you considered adding a way to encourage players to try out harder difficulty after winning a run? Maybe a reminder of the current difficulty mode on the winning screen. (Otherwise the player may keep on playing without realizing about it.)

Ideas / Hyperlink within lore collection

Cogmind has a massive collection of lores, and you can get a lot of the story's background information via hacking terminals. So you would have gather a lot of queries and try to see how they relate to one another. You know what you're still missing if you see an exclamation mark '!' next to a query within the query command.

However, it's a bit difficult to navigate the lore collection if you're trying to understand the story. There's no hyperlink that jumps you from one query to another (whereas query command works well when hacking terminal), so I would have to do a lot of scrolling to look for it. I also don't know which words have a query lore (since nothing is highlighted), nor which words are my missing query. (So I would have to take note of the missing queries whenever I encounter an '!' mark within a query command, just so I can manually hack for it in the future).

Hyperlinking query words within the lore collection would solve these problems. It would be easy to navigate if I can click on a query word to jump to that piece of lore. If there's a query word that I don't have, it can be highlighted as red with an '!' mark.

I'm not sure how difficult it is to implement this. Hopefully it's pretty simple!

In my opinion, it doesn't make sense to have a leaderboard for training mode. Also, I don't think exploration mode sound right. (Maybe "Casual mode"?) The name makes it seem as if something new are added in it. It's also a bit hard to differentiate between training and exploration mode.

I personally think it's fine to leave it as easier mode and extra easier mode. They're easily recognized and accepted upon first look. The more descriptive name might sound better when viewing the leaderboard, but it would be kinda weird to see "Easier  (Training Mode)" and "Easiest (Exploration Mode)".

By the way, would you be concerned if an experienced player plays at "Training mode" just to get super high score?

Fixed Bugs & Non-Bugs / Grenadier sometimes doesn't attack

I went into the Mine at -9 floor, and unfortunately, I came across a bunch of assemblies. I took care of it before the ARC came and dispatched 2 grenadiers. While I was fighting them, they attacked me for a while. After much gun/grenade firing, it came down to me vs one grenadier. It used to attack, but one time, it stopped attacking. It simply walked back and forth for several turns until it finally starts shooting again.

This problem persists for a long time (even before the current update) because I kept forgetting to post it here.  So maybe it's not really a bug? I'm not sure.  :-\

Just finished the seed run now. It was pretty fun overall! I was planning to do some combat run at the beginning, which went pretty smoothly. With so many large storage units, I was hogging a bunch of items which felt pretty great! :D

However, it became clear that too many storage units is not a good thing. I ended up having a lot of energy weapons but no attached heat sinks! I lost very quickly after entering the Lower Cave, when a gang of bots came up and wrecked me to pieces, yet I still refused to let go of my storage units to the bitter end! (Boy, that was bad.)

Lesson: Don't be too greedy with collecting items!

And also, I'm not sure if this is considered a bug or not, but when I saw a garrison access in a room with a sentry hidden at the corner (I was carrying sensor array), I positioned myself at the doorway and fired 2 shots to disable the garrison, believing that the sentry will come after me. Surprisingly, it didn't react at all. (I guess the 24-hour shift is a little to tiring?)
