Rocket launchers == the best part of the game
== easiest way to get self killed == still best part of the game

Seriously though, using them at the right time is the key to staying alive with a combat build, so don't be too afraid to use them. (Not that you or jimmi have that problem, ironpotato =p)
More like quickest way to starve yourself of materials, buuuut they do get me out of pinches.

Yay Biomatter! Congrats! I was wondering when this moment would hit. Had a feeling it would be you or jimmi. I'm still a long ways from winning, but my mid-game is getting much stronger. I like to shoot my way through everything, then run like a bitch if I'm taking too much damage. Rocket launchers == the best part of the game.

I finally tried the army-builder approach, spent an ungodly amount of time on -10 setting everything up, crafting some items for the first time and testing different loadouts, and then... my -don't even know how many- slayers didn't went with me. Not a single one. "I  just need to get to the next fab", I thought. Found some stairs right away, took them, guess what. The freaking mines. Not a terminal or fab in sight. I lasted a bit but a cave-in robbed me of my best stuff and my will to live. I don't really understand why they didn't follow me, a bug? too many guys?
For avoiding the mines, I set auto-climb stairs on. If its a branch you won't go up automatically so you know you've got the wrong stairs. It makes life a lot easier.

Yo, if it means anything, now that I know the difference between direct and indirect hacks I've been trying not to rely so much on manual commands. The very last hack I did in my winning run was not manual, and it sealed the game. I'm sorry if I got everyone in a tizzy over "how OP manual commands are" lol. Note to everyone: indirect hacks (i.e. manual commands) suffer a base -15% to success. 'Deep Network Scanners' can help alleviate that, though. If your Terminal has even a single good command, don't burn it out on indirect hacks. Stick to the listed commands. I only burn out Terminals now if they have nothing of interest.

I've been using manual commands just to get Schematics for slightly better power sources and propulsion. This method seems fairly reliable if you spend about 5 minutes working on it. After that I go back to running around and blowing things up. I have to say repair stations have saved my ass a couple of times recently. I think I like them more than the terminals at this point  ;)

Edit: And of course it's an easy way to get remote datajacks. Which is pretty freaking awesome. Granted those aren't terribly hard to find lying around, but being able to produce them on a whim can be helpful.

I'm not talking about the log, I'm talking about the schematic screen you access through the status window.

I don't know what all parts go off screen, but Remote Datajacks do for me.

Oh my that's much worse. I don't think I have that problem with Remote Datajacks, I'll have to check

I totally have to try this at some point! For now, though, I am still perfecting stealth runs.

FYI, a 'Deep Network Scanner' boosts the strength of indirect hacks by 10%. I actually read the manual (gasp) and found out that 'indirect hacks' basically means any time you use a manual command to pull something not off the given list. I am not sure if Hacking Suites affect indirect hacks, given that knowledge. I really don't know, though they probably help.

Also, more Data Jacks = more better. If you fire off multiple jacks in a volley, you get a bonus to hacking. That's... that's in the manual too... It's pretty neat, actually.
I became about 2x better at the game after reading the manual. There's a lot of nifty info in there, and reading between the lines, like on the indirect hacks thing, also helps fill in some holes.

I've been going terminal hacking heavy already I should really try this. I haven't had much luck with the gaining of minions, but maybe that's my next task.

Wow thanks for listening guys, It is nowhere near where I want it to be, but I'm learning, and the feedback is motivating.

Just saw this post, my god this stuff is good. Just what I need while coding or at work! You uh, you sell albums anywhere? Bandcamp perhaps?

This community is too much, thanks to those of you who took the time to listen to my music,  I have a bunch of tracks, probably 20 or so that need polishing and filling out and mastering, my goal is to get a EP or album out this year, but that will require me to really buckle down and focus these next few months and polish up my mixing and mastering techniques because they just aren't where I want them to be if I am gonna be releasing it as an official first album.   I have a bad habit of hording art for years, I used to draw endlessly and just collected my pieces in a portfolio under my bed, the same thing can be said about my music, hoping to change that soon though.

Cool, definitely keep us updated, I'm still playing your music. Am very impressed.

Definitely a bug, thanks for reporting in. This is caused because the game doesn't actually update FOV during Cogmind displacement, so you managed to ram your way all the way outside your own FOV where the game no longer lets you move :'(. I'll have this fixed for the next release!
Just another tidbit, in case it helps. I was ramming my way through some bots and my camera was stuck in position. My player was moving, but not centered in the window. It went like that for a couple of turns, then something kicked in and the view reset to normal. I don't know if it was lag or if there's some bugs with the way bumping works.

Reproducing bugs is hard man, I need to spend some more time testing these sort of things.

Unrelated note: Alt-F4 to save/quit is the slickest thing ever.

Not if you're running wine on Debian with XFCE. I don't know why, but it kills my desktop panels. I wouldn't want to waste any time on looking into that though, I just restored my panel settings and went on with my day. I'm sure it's some shortcut command I haven't setup right in my environment.

Hmm... Do you have a screenshot of what that looks like?

I have seen the same thing, but later thought it wasn't a bug it was just me because if you look at the manual you can scroll down. I figured I was just trying to scroll wrong. It should be easy to reproduce, just put in a few commands until the messages go off screen.

Ideas / Re: Robot scans
« on: May 28, 2015, 10:30:18 AM »
You don't want to meet the robots that carry prototypes, anyway. They'll eat you for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The whole idea of prototypes is part of the story, too, so there's a reason most robots don't have them.
Every mention of this ever elusive story gets me excited. It's a good thing I don't write fan fiction.

Meta-knowledge plays a key factor in hacking.

Actually i can't understand that either... Though i have not ventured deep enough to talk about balance or understand from where did some people find the list of commands but when you have that list it basically invalidates all the choices in the menu?
I was hoping for a some sort of hacking mini game there (though read few devs/reviewers ranting on hacking minigames) e.g. submitting commands that increase chances and maybe reduce alert levels of other actions by figuring out what was wrong with them when used (like when it says "triggered node purge" typing something like "nodes.reinit_cache()").
The other impression or possible way i thought this will work is that you would have a lower level access to same things i.e. you would have more choice with what you get (less alert with less data - maybe only one location of transporter instead of all?).

I don't see this so much as a problem as a seperate option. To really utilize hacking you have to spec out your character for it. If you're packing hacks that just takes away room for combat and evasion. It's just another variable you have to consider and I quite like it.

My problem with hacking is that in some levels you just really don't have a chance to do anything useful. If you can hack a schematic for something you need, good luck finding a fabricator and not blowing it up in a firefight. If you find a repair station, good luck with it being good enough level to actually repair anything. I think the distribution of terminals/fabs/repair/scanalyzers needs to be fixed up a bit rather than the mechanics. But perhaps some help info in the manual commands would be useful to players just getting started too. I dunno.

Absolutely, thank you for the reminder! Adding to my bug fix notes now...

And thanks for having log uploads enabled. It could come in really handy if you find something very rare that happens in the background.

Yup any time I've had a crash (like twice) one was a scanalyzer, and the other was a fabricator or some such. I thought about putting in a bug report, but I realized I didn't remember what I did to cause it. I'm guessing it was very similar to this. If I recall I had fabricator up and had put a schematic in and then I out of habit hit x to view something on the map. That's what my fuzzy memory recalls but I may be wrong... Didn't realize I could upload crashes to the server.

Strategies / Re: z << Manual Command

Ahhh, that makes so much sense. I've been trying to find some alternate strategies, and I thought drones might be useful for a couple of them. I knew all the ordering commands, just wasn't sure how that whole obtaining drones spiel went.

I then rewired the bot by bumping into it repeatedly and when it came to I had a Sentry as an ally :)  I had no hackware at the time.
Haha! That's insane - what the fuck? I would never do that. The side effects of bumping even the little shits like Serfs can be disastrous. Good job, though.
Lucky for you! When you're rewiring you don't deal or take damage. So you can bump a deactivated bot to your heart's content.

Someone really needs to help identify some drones, because twice now I've found a drone bay, but never figured out how to get drones...

None the less, I love watching these, I've successfully fabbed a mic. fission core. Still trying for those biomechanical wings though.

The old Troubles of Middle Earth (TOME3) before the name change to Tales of Maj'Eal for TOME4.
For a while, about ten years ago, I (poorly) maintained a PSP port of TOME2.3.x after Gendal, but before Daddy32.
So you're the one I have to thank for PSP TOME! I played a fair bit of it. Man the PSP is just not suited for roguelikes...

Hi, I'm ironpotato. You may catch me stalking around on reddit during the work week when things are slow.

So I heard about Cogmind through the /r/roguelikes subreddit development post, thought it looked really neat and the progress was really cool to watch. I saw the post about the alpha and knew I had to try it. Now I'm addicted....

I started out with nethack as my first intro to roguelikes and I continue to play it up to this day. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. I have to say my current favorites are Brogue (which I sunk way too much time into, and then just abandoned), Dwarf Fortress (I'm so bad at it), DoomRL I spent a long time playing and still haven't beaten, aaaannnddd that's about all I've played for more than 10 hours.

My other favorite games are mostly strategy, Starcraft II, Fire Emblem, and Advance Wars to name a few. But I'm also a giant Pokemon nerd.

When I'm not playing videogames I'm probably programming something, setting up a new NAS, turning a netbook into a firewall, or anything generally computer nerdy. But I also enjoy swimming, hiking, fishing, and shooting guns like a good American. I enjoy playing guitar although I'm really bad at it, and I spend a ton of time reading scifi and watching random animes. Not to mention I do occasionally play some Pen and Paper RPGs when I can get friends together and I'm also a really bad Magic the Gathering player. :)

Can't wait to get some Cogmind tournaments going so I can lose but have some fun checking out everyone's builds!
