So, the inaugural run just got done.

I tunnel visioned on new content and rushed all the way to research with absolutely no preparation. I entered quarantine with an ok build. I had an enh optical array for sensing and had a fairly beefy bot. The main problem was that I had 20 matter and wasn't paying attention. Boy, that was frustrating. EVERYTHING WAS SEALED OFF. It was so sad. I just found all this cool shit and wasn't able to get to it because I had no matter to equip any weapons. SO MUCH ALIEN TECH IN THERE. On the other hand, I uncovered some lore. Found the live alien specimen and kidnapped it :).

Anyway, next time I am going to do a much more serious run and see if I can uncover some secrets.

I also found a bug. The screenshot feature keeps saving to screenshot000.jpg. So, any new screenshot overwrites the old one. :)

And thanks for the bug report--I fixed it and included it in the hotfix (http://www.gridsagegames.com/forums/index.php?topic=599.msg5021#msg5021) for those who jumped on the download as soon as Alpha 11 hit.

OK, so I've been a busy bee since release. Four wins below, and of course, spoilers, even in the morgue files.

First win:

I decided to try combat, as the item swapping changes were sweet. Around -4, I ran out of weapons and got stomped. I had to go naked and ram bots to get out. Somehow, I made it to Research with just about nothing. However, I found myself some flight units, and I escaped somehow.

After what I learnt in the previous run, I had something special in mind. I used the Data Conduit for the first time (I only figured it out this run). However, my build was not as good as the previous run, at least initially. It ended up being phenomenal, however. I went into Testing as well this time and took something there for a certain Zhirov. :P

It's fun to do that, eh? Also kinda scary...

Out of curiosity, is that cave attached to Zion now accessible? 
Zion will be getting an expansion in the future (probably Alpha 12, though I haven't decided), on top of a way to access those doors in the back.

All other doors and exits are now open except for Command :)

I, too, would be interested in seeing a great Decker run :)

Note that I personally prefer some of the discussion remain here on the forums, for several reasons:
The Discord is useful for certain purposes, including development (the Alpha 11 release day bugs that needed hotfixes were a life saver, especially considering the RPS article later that day!), and to an extent attracting new players (during Alpha 10 the relatively active #cogmind channel certainly brought in its fair share of new players--most were coming from there!), but the forums are important too!

So not to discourage our other resident experts from joining us over there (it's a lot of fun, really!), just wanted to point out that I hope we'll continue seeing some quality/interesting/fun discussion here as we have for previous releases. Activity has certainly dropped off since we started chatting it up on Discord :P

Of course, I'm a part of that, since I can continue posting topical threads for discussion if and when there are any. There have been fewer and fewer of those as the game approaches 1.0 :D (A good sign, yeah.)

Well, I started a lore run which aimed at hitting Cetus and beyond. Barely made it through Hub_04(d), and had to ram a serf standing on the exit when I had about 200 core left and enemies all around. Legs were the go until I reached Research. However, I got out of Hub_04(d) with NO propulsion, so my move speed was 1k time, and within a short span of time I had programmers and hunters all over me. It was ridiculous. I had matter issues but couldn't walk over matter due to my movespeed, and had similar energy issues. My weapons were blown off as well, and I was fortunate to fight off some groups with weapons scavenged from the battlefield. I had to go to great lengths to get any propulsion at all. After I stabilised somewhat, I found a cache of hover units. At that point I switched to playing a stealth build after killing some watchers, and left before hitting Quarantine because of corruption. I then went to Testing and nearly lost everything. I was able to kill a few hunters, and then by equipping their KE Penetrators and the Adv. Target Analyzers from programmers, I stumbled upon a sick build. I went to Access before things built up too much, though in all honesty I probably should've stayed there longer. I started video recording in early Access. The farming was good. My build wasn't perfectly set up but it still rocked Access pretty hard. I could've farmed at the chokepoint for longer but I was beginning to lose patience (it is very tedious toggling my processors on and off). Needless to say, I lost grip on the situation after leaving that spot. The ending was crazy!

Wow, what a score!

I will say, a consistent win-rate doesn't mean the game is too easy.  It just means you've figured it out.  A strong DCSS player can win 5 games in a row if they played seriously.  Honestly, I'm suspicious of roguelikes that can't be beaten consistently (e.g. TGGW, IVAN).  This genre is embodied by games with high skill caps that should reward mastery of the mechanics. 

Plus, this game has multiple endings.  Getting out of Access is one thing.  I'm sure there will be endings, especially once Command opens, that will try our skill.

Hehe, easier? Definitely. Especially with all the new toys from Research branches! But as Happylisk correctly states, part of this is gearing up for Command ;). Even now, though, it's still not too many players who can consistently reach the late game, much less win at all!

TGGW was originally designed intentionally to be so random you might very well not be able to win a given run, but the dev has somewhat softened on that stance over the years, and changed a few things as a result. With IVAN you're not supposed to win, so I guess it doesn't matter much there :P

Agreed, that's what I've been thinking. Really that's how the whole game was balanced, too, which is why it's generally grown easier with each release (while still remaining challenging). Alpha 1 was damn hard. And the 7DRL? It's probably unwinnable without cheating the AI :P

I was literally going to use that exact phrase.  I agree, make Command nuts.  One of my complaints with DCSS' end game is that it's too easy if you know what you're doing.

Only the first and the fifth wins were combat. In the first, I only started out as combat and I switched to flight when I got stripped naked in -3.

The fifth was a very close win, if you check the very end of that video. I was strong enough to win earlier but I pushed my luck almost too far.

Armour might well work out when combined with force fields and resist items. In my fifth win, my power, propulsion and guns mainly served as armour. It worked out quite well, but I believe a lot of that was due to having strong enough offensive power to kill enemies before they had much of a chance to hurt me. When I lost control of the situation, I was stripped quickly.

edit: The big advantage with armour is that it has so much coverage that you can cycle armour instead of other damaged parts. I like propulsion as armour, but it really lacks coverage unless massed, and that takes up valuable slots. It's awkward swapping multiple parts during combat, and you eventually lose important weaponry. With good armour, I think you can get away with fewer spare weapons, and instead you can carry spare armour, which is more slot/coverage efficient.  I found some armour in Testing which would work wonders for a strong combat build. I think we're only scraping the surface of the scores possible with this release.

I went to Zhirov and he wasn't there! Was very disappointing. I decided to trash his place in my rage. Armory also spawned on -4, the same as Zhirov, so I couldn't visit the secret there either. I couldn't stick around in Quarantine as long as I wanted, and didn't even find Testing before I had to get out of Research.

I like those strategic discussions! You make an interesting case for the utility of armor/shields/force fields. I agree with you that it works wonder to absorb damage. The protection to the core is very nice, and the ability of armor to eat critical hits is also nothing to sneeze at.

The main weakness of that kind of build is the low supply of replacement parts. You'll find none of these parts in the caves, for instance. If you fight a lot, eventually you'll run out of these uncommon parts and then you'll have lots of utility slots that you cannot fill with high-coverage/high-integrity parts. This is very bad, since the effect of adding "-X" to coverage has a much bigger impact on core protection than adding "+X" to coverage, due to diminishing returns.

Now that armor has been beefed up, I agree that it's worthwhile to carry spares. I just don't think it can entirely replace propulsion armor, especially since propulsion is useful for other purposes like recoil reduction and protection from fighters.

That nice round number sure did stand out :P

The caves aren't quite as bad as some assume, with the right tactics. Replacement parts are certainly harder to find lying around, but there are still several ways to relatively reliably salvage them from other bots. (But yeah I'd never want to go in without a full inventory!)

Well, the way I look at it, the build isn't running yet when you reach the caves. I think you need a certain critical mass of offensive utilities before they suddenly become godlike, and I'm finding that this happens around -2.

I was 4 steps from the exit (roughly 2 turns), but this time, luck was not on my side.

I farmed Testing quite thoroughly, but I think I stayed a little too long. I was out of good weapons when I progressed to Access, and could never stabilise. I was forced to use energy weapons, which required a lot of heat sinks, which reduced my offensive capabilities. I was also taking more damage because I couldn't oneshot enemies, and thus I was absorbing a lot of heat from thermal damage.

This game, I tried the opposite of a propulsion stack :P. I am not sure how effective it was. While I had armour, the build was monstrous, but I ran out during Testing.

I also enjoy these discussions on strategy.

Somewhat hidden downside of weapon cyclers: a lot more heat, energy and matter per turn! I felt that several times during Testing.

With the new branches in Research, it's definitely easier to navigate it.

I still don't have a clue on how to beat Access with a combat build aside of being lucky. In my last game I replicated my long-range sensors with the artifact in Quarantine, and I tried to play it as a half-stealth hybrid, killing only the programmer dispatches. No good. I explored about half the map, and I found the cycler but not the exit. All terminals were level 3, so no use. I eventually died to attrition, with parts shot one by one.

Do you use any particular strategy for Access zxc?

Those speed runs are fun! My first attempt aborted due to not finding any flight units. My second game went much the same way, until I finally bumped into pests and got some flight units. I only found a >1 stash of flight units in Access, after I had located the exit.

1405 turns. Not great but not bad. Pretty easy way to earn high scores. Totally luck dependent.

Oh I think you can! There are many new sources of bonus points, together with ways to vastly improve your capabilities. So that stacked on to your previous high score could pull it off, but only a winning run can capitalize on it all.

Thanks, yeah these speed runs are lots of fun. And certainly easier to get a decent score with than combat. However, I still think the sky's the limit with a combat run, but it's difficult for everything to go right.

I don't think the speed runs are totally luck dependent, though. I got bad luck in Research and still managed to reach Access in a workable state. As for finding flight units, I rely on finding a cache somewhere in Materials or Factory. However, the default hover is not bad (50 vs 40 with a flight unit).

So, still slowly catching up with zxc lorewise :p. Unfortunately, I don't get to play too much these days.
I was roughly aiming to continue Zhirov's plot arc. So, that meant either armory or testing. Unfortunately Zhirov spawned in -4 and testing spawned in -3. So, had to pick between the Armory or Testing. My build wasn't very sturdy anyway, so went with testing. Testing was somewhat tense. Unfortunately, I was too engrossed to take screenshots. So...assume that it was exciting :p.

Finally got to access and wow..Zhirov delivered. Easiest access ever.

I also found the warlord on the way and got out instantly (like in 9 turns). I lost the previous run derping around the warlord. Got shredded on the way out. Those messages are somewhat misleading. Maybe I am supposed to wait till the counter attack starts...shrugs.

Which messages? Maybe you haven't been back in the latest version, but in Alpha 11 there's a derelict which comes up to you when the counterattack starts and explicitly instructs you to leave immediately. You can leave before (or *gulp* after) that, but it's harder...

Turns out they announce when the squads spawn, which was right by the exit. So, I waited for the announcement and flew towards the exit and was greeted by the announced squads. Did not go well :p.

edit: I actually tried to leave when the MAIN.C's assault begins. Didn't realize that I had to wait until the coast is clear.

You can leave when it begins, too--just have to be careful! The biggest problem comes when they actually make it into the base interior itself, hence the newly-added final warning.

I don't know why, but my first attempt at things like realtime speedruns, turncount speedruns, pacifist runs... etc always seem blessed, and then I struggle in subsequent tries.

Yes, you were! :) I watched some bits of the video and you found a 3-weight grenade launcher early on, which is the perfect weapon to get flight units from pests.

Generally, you need to be lucky to find good flight units and hackware along the way, and of course to find exits that lead where you want. Finally, hacking must succeed in Access to locate the exit (you just stumbled into it in your run, which was incredibly lucky) and you must successfully hack the door open.

My best run so far is 1256 turns, but I think I can do better by optimizing my exit search algorithm. I found that it's best to collect all the matter available early on, because matter depletion is a frequent thing. In general melee'ing anything for anything except flight units wastes too much time.

It's disturbing how easily you can just clown around in front of anything with some decent flight units. In a game, I got to the end of Quarantine after taking a wrong exit, where I basically just flew past everything with little trouble. It's so much easier than in score-based combat builds, where you need to stay alive for a long long time.

I'm in such good shape that I don't want to mess it up. Not sure whether to stay on this floor longer and farm assault squads or progress to Access. Wish I could enter Testing...

Also not sure what to evolve next. I'm leaning towards 2 utilities. Weaponry would be good but I don't have that many spares. I'm virtually oneshotting everything, so a shorter volley might be preferable...

Nice build-up! You might consider switching *back* to a stealth build for Access. Especially if you want to farm those assault squads before, you'll have hell in Access with alert level 5 right from the start. Plus if you evolve 2 more weapons, you can run into churn issues with your low inventory. FWIW I'd take propulsion, but it's me...

That is not something I considered. True though that it's going to be hell right from the start. I'm confident I can win this if I don't leave it too late to make a run for the exit. It's too late to go back to stealth though.

I already have a lot of propulsion. Check my inventory, I have two spare 2x armours as well (combined with a force field). So I'm not convinced that propulsion is best here. I'm not going to continue until tomorrow though, as I'd enjoy more discussion and such. :)

I'm considering going back and picking up some optics and evolving at least 1 utility slot for the start of Access. I haven't been scanned by a researcher, so I won't have Z series or combat programmers after me. It'll just be plain assault squads. At a good choke point, I should be able to demolish wave after wave of them.

2) Does any else think that it's problematic that Zhirov and Armory can spawn on the same level?   An entire aspect of the game can become undoable simply due to bad level spawning luck.

Yep. I got this in one of my recent games. Very sad... I told Kyzrati about it and I think the response was equivalent to a shrug.

No, not a joke. Your force field is one crit away from oblivion. Armor is nice, but what will you do when you run out? From the look of it, the battlefield will soon be littered in propulsion parts. So I say propulsion is your best move defensively.

Rereading earlier messages, I should note that I've already been farming assault squads for some time, and I'm definitely on alert 5.

Re: force field, don't jinx it!

Propulsion is possible... you'd go with two propulsion slots? With another utility slot I can run another large storage unit, which could hold yet more spares. My main concern will be finding a good chokepoint in Access. Afterwards, I'll need to transition into finding the exit before I lose everything. Escaping to the surface will be worth at least 10k score for me.

edit: Other concern is matter. Though, with two kinetic weapons, I won't eat through matter that quickly. Unlike previous combat runs, I will definitely not be hurting for energy or heat dissipation at any point. So I can use energy weapons for sure. KE penetrators are my most tested and certain friends, but they are only rating 6 (if I got more multirails it might be game over for main.c).

With the new branches in Research, it's definitely easier to navigate it.

I still don't have a clue on how to beat Access with a combat build aside of being lucky. In my last game I replicated my long-range sensors with the artifact in Quarantine, and I tried to play it as a half-stealth hybrid, killing only the programmer dispatches. No good. I explored about half the map, and I found the cycler but not the exit. All terminals were level 3, so no use. I eventually died to attrition, with parts shot one by one.

Do you use any particular strategy for Access zxc?

Which artefact? There are tons, man!

I haven't had a different strategy for dealing with Access. In both my primarily combat builds that made it there this Alpha, I had success when using a long corridor to do most of my fighting in. Finding the surface exit is tricky. In my first ever combat win, I got to the exit first, then started farming. I might try doing that in this game, if I can. The problem is that my alert level is already 5. Once assault squads start coming for you, I don't think you can reduce threat if you keep killing them.

My earlier video featuring Access farming is the only combat footage I have of the floor (and in general, in fact). I plan on recording the entirety of Access with commentary when I resume my game. Though I'm not sure I'll be saying much other than 'I hope this crits'!

Finding the Surface exit is something I've had a lot of practise with doing. I hope I can make it in my game. Farming Access from the exit might be the ideal way to go, because you can escape at the right moment. I wouldn't mind the multirails and armour from the behemoths too.

That's what I always try to do (find the exit first). Farming is easy, finding the exit is difficult. Even if you had 100% hit & crit rates, in uncontrolled conditions you can only target 1 or 2 robots per volley. You can't always prevent programmers from shooting back at you. You don't have hackware, you're moving sluggishly on legs, and you'll have to deal with corruption on entry... I hope your exit-finding skills are better than mine :D

Something along those lines has been in the plans for a few releases now, but I keep pushing it back because it's been a less pressing issue that only impacts a tiny number of players so far. I'm watching you guys... ;)

I'm playing a stealth build in Access. I killed no one, sealed garrisons with hacking (NOT a jam), destroyed no machine. I got a "significant disruption event" and assault. I checked a terminal, alert level is 2-Z. What gives?

Hard to say without seeing everything that transpired, but it won't spike for no reason, and as of one of the more recent releases it doesn't go down as much as it used to when traveling between floors.

OK thanks. I'll monitor the situation in my next games. I had assumed the alert was zero. Ironically I could have purged it as much as I wanted with all the hackware I was carrying. I got all those garrisons sealed but I played badly and I got stripped due to the unexpected dispatches before I could convert to a combat build. Die and learn 8)

For several alphas there it had become that purges were pretty much unnecessary even as a devastating combat build, so I changed the rules such that alert doesn't come down quite so easily just from travel. Purges are a pretty good idea now if you really want to lower it after a good amount of fighting. (Traveling through Waste or multiple branches also works, of course, but even that isn't perfectly effective.)

That's bizarre. I'd like to see the morgue after you finish. I don't think that's ever happened to me. (Perhaps enemies remember you from previous runs? :P)

For my game I'm considering 1 utility and 1 weapon slot, for a large storage unit and another weapon (due to my insane built-in heat dissipation and energy, I can run any cannon or energy weapon).

I can also go for two more weapon slots perhaps, and fill one or two slots with weaker weapons (quantum rifles etc). That is probably better as makeshift armour than propulsion, and will be just as plentiful. My energy/heat can handle it if I decide to use them in volleys too.

Either way, it might be best for me to equip an extra large storage unit now and grab what I can, before progressing, evolving, and reorganising my items.

edit: I'm leaning towards going 2x weapon now, as going from 2 weapons to 4 is an increase of 50 to volley time (300 -> 350) but much more damage. It's also good as armour. The innate energy supply / heat dissipation of this build is significantly different from my previous combat builds, so I think I should be able to mix in energy weapons effectively.

I did take two weapon slots, and in hindsight, it was definitely the right choice.

I left it a touch too long before transitioning to flight. It seems there is a strange bug involving groups of grunts/brawlers hopping around corners as fast as swarmers, which contributed to my demise. I still had good items, but I was in a bad location and out of weapons (though weapons were all over the place). My core was also getting low.

I believe I was close to the exit. If I didn't try exploring, I could've farmed more heavily. And if I didn't commit to finding the exit, I would've made some different decisions, resulting in a higher score. The matter drive and sigix were useless in my inventory, taking up 4 slots the entire time.

I was also unable to find Warlord in Research, earlier in the run. Very strange...

I'm disappointed that this was only 50k. I farmed for what felt like an age. My worst enemies were saboteurs from assault squads, which are nearly impossible to hit and blow off all yo items.

Given that Access took so long, and that I recorded in many chunks, and that the overall run wasn't very impressive in the end, I think I'll skip uploading this.

I found Command though. I would've been able to enter it with a pretty good setup. Maybe I can blame the incomplete state of the game. :P

Some cool tidbits: 2.5 hours spent in Access, peak influence of 9.7k, 98 assault squads dispatched (I think I defeated all but three), and 61% of the run spent at alert 5.

All my fighting started at -2 and Access. Before then, I had destroyed very few robots because I was a flight build. Given the amount of effort that went into this run, I'm disappointed in how low it scored, and I will definitely switch back to lore runs and speed runs. I'd also like to try a hybrid of some kind, and/or a melee build. But I have doubts as to the viability of each of those compared with pure flight + stealth and pure combat.

That's crazy.

Certainly an impressive score, too, which would've been more so if you'd pulled off a win.

It's still possible for combat bots to sometimes slip past one another at corners to get at you. I implemented one change to prevent that from happening too often, but it does still sometimes occur. Not sure of the conditions.

Yeah, you need to destroy about 700 robots to score high. My true combat games last longer than 2.5 hours!

I would've killed well over 700 robots if I started out with combat. But this was a lore-flight run, and I only converted to combat right before Access. So nearly all the score and robot killing was from Access. I don't think I made many mistakes in Access, either. I had force fields up for a good portion of the time, had armour most of the time, had utilities the entire time, had good weapons up until the very end. Fought in chokepoints the vast majority of the time. I think I did everything right, and I was whittled down slowly (saboteurs are the worst).

I'm not sure you can farm Access more than I did that game, without perhaps some better items from Testing. Another problem was item attrition due to the floor being saturated with items. Corruption build up was also a problem. There was always the risk of rejecting a part and then losing it for good, because you were standing on a deep pile of stuff.

I think a higher scoring combat run would be combat from the start, and would visit all the branches (except Recycling), and would also farm the final floors in a similar manner. And of course, it would either win, or commit to not reaching the surface, and therefore would stay with ideal positioning the entire time.

My chokepoint in the Access farming video I did was the best one I've seen. It worked super well with optics and long-ranged weaponry.

Also, have you explored much of Testing, Quarantine, etc? Theory-crafting is all well and good, but there are a lot of cool new tools and toys which could potentially play a big role in theory-crafting. I can basically guarantee it.

I played combat after a very long time. I started a run so that I could take some screenshots to write a "How to survive Materials" guide and thought, "ok lemme just do -7 and see what combat feels like" and went all the way up to -2 :p. I think combat is fine as long as you don't dive into caves. Caves is too RNG for my taste. Anyway, I got to -3 and dived into the armory. I was in a good shape and thought I should go look for the secret map in there. Turns out the programmer dispatches in that map is bugged (i.e they don't happen) and guess what, I cleared the entire Armory!! Not a single bot was left standing and proceed to search every inch of that place. I still couldn't find the map.

Indeed, as discussed in Discord chat (just confirming here for others) all Armory dispatches are blocked, and have been restored to normal for Alpha 12.

Had a pretty good run going.  I incorporated two advanced hacking utilities into my combat build.  The loss of combat effectiveness was more than made up for by being able to instantly find the stairs.  I'll probably make this a staple of my builds in the future.

Getting to research, I decide to hack the branch stairs and find that Testing is nearby.  Up until this point I still hadn't been into the Research branches and figured this would by a good chance to check it out since I was in fairly decent shape.  I figured Testing would be a gift basket of cool toys.

And it was, as well as tons of extermination squads and friggin combat programmers.  The latter shredded me and further combat programmer dispatches on -2 finished me off.  God damn testing does not screw around. 

In other news, triple HERF cannon action versus grunts is pretty funny.

HERF cannon arrays are pretty much always fun :)

For a long while I was having trouble resisting incorporating nice hackware I found into my combat build, but always felt it kept me from being a fully effective fighter, so I've been resisting the urge more recently to see if I fare better. So far I've found I pretty much can't hack anything at all, which is kind of annoying :P

Testing can be nasty, or not too terrible--you know, like a lot of branches xD. My seed run from last week ended there...

One thing I have to keep reminding myself is that combat runs are basically hard mode.  If you combat it up all the way to Research, the alert level is going to be pretty high by the time you get to those branches, unless you take a dip in Waste on -4.  I'm sure zipping around Testing with a high speed and low alert level is a lot easier... provided you don't eat a stasis bubble.

I loved those stasis guys though.. thanks for the shields while I kill your buddies!

Well... (Researcher) stasis beams don't actually shield you like traps do! They just prevent movement, unless you've met the other... special guys (I've not heard of anyone meeting them before, though).

Whenever damage passes through a shield or protective stasis effect there's that special shielding sfx, so notice you won't hear it while under fire and Researchers are holding you for study while reinforcements arrive.

(I wonder if I should change the beam color back to green, which it was set to originally. I wanted all stasis-related effects to be the same color, but if that might lead to confusion...)

Combat is usually going to be more dangerous, though yeah.

I tried incorporating hackware into my combat builds. It just doesn't work. It'll get blasted off after a few fights, or get destroyed by a fighter. I suppose you can hoard it for when you find a level 1 terminal. If you have a god build like zxc's then it'll last longer, but then again having hackware directly reduces the combat potential of your build, so I don't think it's really viable. It works a lot better for a stealth build, where you just want to assimilate a programmer dispatch.

I wouldn't argue that stealth builds can't use it better (since that's a given :P), but many of my winning combat runs did rely on occasional use of hackware. One slot can go a long way there when you've found something good! Not necessary by any means, but it did help.

Well, my exploits didn't work out.

I tried building a killbox out of rock using a tunneler. It turns out these guys don't reinforce like they do in Materials. The tunnel crumbles on them.

Next I tried using engineers to build walls. But they can't be hacked, the schematic doesn't exist in the database and I haven't found a disruption gun that does less than 10 damage so that I could rewire one on my side.

Last I tried using the barrier walls of Access to seal myself into an enclosed place, with a neutral engineer repairing the weaker blue barrier behind me. I recall this repair happening a few alphas ago. Then I was hoping to crit through walls at the ARCs and programmers who couldn't me hit back. I'd still have to go out from time to time but an engineer could reseal after me every time. However no engineer came and I got sick of waiting.

On the list of low-priority stuff I should do is completely remove the BUILD order, since the enemy wouldn't know what to do with you once you're capable of that nastiness :P. I've left it in all this time because the feature itself is fully implemented, and didn't really want to outright remove it after putting in all that work in the first place...

Note: Engineers cannot repair blue barriers or machines, only doors and walls.

I attempted to determine what makes the deadliest glass cannon combat build. I started as a stealth build, got myself 5 advanced hacking suites and a system shield, and got to work. I didn't manage to fab as much as I wanted, but I still got the gist of it. The fundamental of the build is two heavy flak cannons, plus a lot of target analyzers to pump up the crit rate, and some targetting computers to hit more. The flaks deliver 6 projectiles each, and the target analyzers bring the crit rate north of 50%. The odds of one of the 12 projectiles critting the core are high.

While it's not a sustainable build (you can't replace the flaks), it works rather well against normal robots. It fails completely against behemoths and special robots. I got stripped against Alpha 8, even though I had the last word. When Kyzrati says Behemoths and co are immune to crits, he means it. It wouldn't be so bad if only the core was immune to crits, but all their equipment is too.

I noticed experimentally that weapon cyclers perform even better than you'd think. Whether you pick the advanced version or the experimental version does not matter. You hit the 50% cap anyway. Rather amazingly, a second cycler has increasing returns. The firepower increases are respectively 33% and 100%. In practice it works even better because you can get 2 volleys out by the time the enemy gets one.

I'll try pumping core analyzers next. If you get >50% proccing odds, it should work pretty well against all enemies combined with big guns and weapon cyclers.

Forgot to add, the big problem with that kind of build is that it's unbearable to play. Every time you shoot, you have to deactivate/reactivate 6 propulsions and 10 utilities.
Propulsion is pretty easy with the toggle key. As for the utility side, there are significant changes you will appreciate in Alpha 12.

Also, I just buffed all Flak weapons yesterday--damage is going up, matter use is coming down a bit. (So that would've been even more effective, but yeah, still not going to be good against hardened targets.)

So I just enjoyed a nice round. I still don't really know a lot and mostly just shoot around (hell, I had super fun with 3 EMP blasters, lol) but got pretty far compared to my other games. I died pretty unexpected: I hacked a terminal and didn't pay attention - I got detected and they dispatched a squad that TOTALLY cornered an destroyed me. I felt pretty unkillable before. :x

Had a silly run where I managed to get to Testing again.  Even after finding a few cool toys I still got torn to shreds in there.

With the acknowledgment that I am not the world's best gamer and that combat mode is hard mode in Cogmind, I think the branch difficulties in cogmind need tweaking.  Unless you have a perfect build, you are going to come out of any caves run in much worse shape than when you came in as a combat build.  Extension and from what I'm so far seen Testing are likewise brutal.  I understand that branches are supposed to be a high risk/reward scenarios, but the risks are really, really high and the rewards for the mid-game branches are not exactly breathtaking.  Every time I limp out of Zion, DM, or Zhirov with a combat build I always think to myself "well that wasn't worth it."  (Warlord has a great reward but getting out of that branch alive with a slow moving combat build is a feat unto itself).  I'm sure that's not the feeling you're shooting for. 

I've done branch runs with stealth builds the few times I've played stealth and it's of course infinitely easier.  But for players like me who have a strong preference for combat builds, visiting large swathes of the game feels like a suboptimal decision. 

Even if you think this a legitimate point, I'm not sure what the solution is.  Decreasing the branch difficulty or increasing the rewards helps stealth/hacker runs who need no help.  Further buffs to combat builds will make non-branch combat runs too easy (they're in a good place as is). 

One possibility is adding things to the Caves that would only be of use to a combat build, such as the occasional cache of heavy armor/weaponry/treads.  Not of much use to a stealth build, a godsend to a beat up combat cog.   Another possibility is adding the chance for a fabricator with a finite number of matter in Zion.  It would make runs where DM was on -7 and Zion with a fabricator on -6 very, very satisfying.

I think you'll find Alphas 12-14 will be somewhat different in that regard. We're only now moving into balance territory, and part of the issue is you were gone for a number of Alphas during which the game kept getting easier, but then suddenly it got more deadly in 11 when I went a tiny bit overboard clamping down on farming :P

Each type of branch still has some tweaking to go: Caves/Mines will be getting more content (they're technically still incomplete) and MAIN.C-controlled branches will be getting a little easier, because their primary difficulty for combat runs stems from the recent alert level changes that are going to be scaled back.

(That said, I don't find caves to be difficult as is, and I only run combat. But I also tend to stay away from danger as best possible, and use other cave-appropriate tactics like always fighting up in robots' faces and grabbing stuff as soon as one goes down if my inventory isn't already full!)

Can slow down / reduce self-destruction of items in the caves, which would mainly help combat builds.

I like that suggestion.  Item destruction can be mitigated by EM weapons or adjacent combat.  Sometimes neither is an option. 

E: you can also make how long it takes an item to go poof depend on integrity.  Processors and devices go poof the quickest.  Then things like legs and guns.  Cannons, armor, and treads could take the longest to self-destruct.

It'll be considered if necessary--I like how the idea works mostly to help combat but not flight. Might be premature at this point due to planned updates to cave content, and Cogmind is already going to get more powerful again in Alpha 12.
