I want to program my robot. I think that's what first drew me to this idea, was memories of shitty games from my childhood where you were allegedly going to be able to program a robot.

There existed such games, you just didn't know about them.  Take a look at http://www.myabandonware.com/game/robot-odyssey-6g

if you are playing cogmind you aren't in emacs.

You sure?  emacs is looking like a better and better operating system as time goes on.

Since tiles are supported, couldn't you make a set of "tiles" for each font of the right size and display those tiles at the appropriate position?  Or are you not willing to do something that hacky (especially since there wouldn't necessarily be a 1-to-1 mapping of tile to character in some cases).

I'm not sure how to describe it, but a picture is worth a thousand words.  Here's a mockup:

Is there any ETA for key-remapping being supported by the engine?  Is it not currently possible?

Well this is embarrassing ;D  I can't reproduce it now.  But essentially what happened was that if the mouse was outside of cogmind's window I could target fine and the cursor wouldn't follow the mouse; but then when I pressed f a second time to actually fire nothing would get fired.  Now what's happening is the mouse is getting moved to the location of the cursor and then everything fires fine.

I was stating two separate problems, one of them cogmind/wine's fault, the other my laptop's fault.  The one that's the laptop's fault is my wrists bumping the trackpad.  The one that's cogmind/wine's fault is the targeting cursor automatically going to the mouse's location even if the mouse hasn't moved or clicked.

Disabling the trackpad doesn't actually help because the mouse is still located somewhere.  The main problem is that even though I'm not moving the trackpad the cursor still automatically jumps to the location of the mouse.

I often play on a laptop which, being a laptop, has a trackpad that tends to get bumped.  Ordinarily, this wouldn't be a huge problem, since I use keyboard mode, except, that the all keyboard seems to do is hide the mouse pointer, rather than disable it.  Even this wouldn't be such a big deal (even if it is imo a flaw), if it weren't for the fact that whenever I try to fire the target always follows the location of the mouse pointer.  Even if I haven't clicked it, or moved it, the firing cursor always moves to the location of the mouse.  This doesn't happen if I move the mouse outside of cogmind's window, but then when I press "f" a second time to actually fire after targetting, it doesn't shoot.  I think I ought to mention that I'm running on linux on wine.  Any advice?

Alright, cool, that worked.  Are there any plans to find the underlying cause?  Maybe a debugger could help?

Also, once I alt-tab out of cogmind, if I try to alt-tab back in, it stops accepting my inputs.  It plays very smoothly, though.

I'm running on linux, with wine, and everything seems to be running smoothly so far, except for one thing.  I'm not sure if this is a GNOME problem or a wine problem, but when I try to alt-tab to other windows, I'm actually "in" the other windows (to exit cogmind, I was able to ^c in the terminal I opened it from), but cogmind is still up on the screen.  Anyone know anything about this?  Any workarounds?

« on: September 17, 2016, 07:09:59 PM »
I ordinarily dual-boot windows and linux, so I had cogmind on windows' portion of the hard drive; but I'd noticed that I've been booting into windows less and less, and I don't want to stop playing cogmind.  So I found the email in my history that specified the download link, but when I clicked on it I got a page that looked like this:

What's happening?  How can I download cogmind?

What I mean is, will the "latest and greatest" version also be available from steam, or will the steam version be some sort of stable version?

Once the steam release is available, will the alpha version continue to be distinct from the steam version, or will they be the same version?  Will the version we can download from this website continue to be available after the steam release goes out?

Ah, okay.  Thanks for clearing this up, this was the only thing keeping me from going to the keyboard full-time!

Here ya go.  Literally just pressed "f", and then since it automatically highlighted that monster, enter.

Fixed Bugs & Non-Bugs / How to attack using the keyboard?
« on: August 11, 2016, 10:20:16 PM »
Is there any way to attack using the keyboard?  The only thing I can find in the help menu is the "f" command, but when I press it and select a monster, I get a message, "No active guided weapon."  I can still attack fine clicking with the mouse, though.  What can I do about this?

Ideas / Allow examine outside of keyboard mode?
« on: August 11, 2016, 10:15:00 PM »
Pressing "x" while not in keyboard mode gives a message, "Examine only necessary in keyboard mode."  I don't quite see the reasoning behind this, though.  Since the key doesn't do anything else while in mouse mode, why not let people use examine while in mouse mode?

I actually purchased cogmind quite a while ago, and haven't played much since.  I thought I would get back into the game, and as a part of my scanning the entirety of the site and clicking on every link that looked remotely interesting, I noticed something.  On the purchase page it says that the prime, improved, and advanced tiers will all get a steam key.  However, in the "Fine Print" section, it says

Quote
Steam keys cannot be issued until Cogmind is on Steam, which will not be until the game is closer to completion some time in late 2016 (?). When the time comes, in the case of Improved/Advanced tiers Steam keys go out directly to the owners of each copy of Cogmind.

What about the prime tier?  Do they not get a steam key as well?  Do they not go out "directly"?  What would that even mean?  Is this just a typo?
