This week's seed: AntigravFireCompactor



The Weekly Seed is open to anyone, and we encourage you to share your experiences, stories, and tactics over the course of your run.

The rules are as follows:
  • The Weekly Seed begins from the date this thread is posted and lasts about seven days.
  • Make sure you are running the correct version of Cogmind (see thread subject).
  • Enter the seed and abort your current game to initiate the seed (more details are below).
  • Verify you are not running the tutorial and that the screenshots below match your game.
  • Play through the game once. This is a friendly event and we are all honest people.
  • When finished, post your scoresheet here (it should be the newest file in /scores) and any other screenshots/stories/strategies you wish to share with the community.
  • If you want to share details about the seed or your approach, make sure you use spoiler tags.
  • Due to the spoilerific nature of this thread, be sure to avoid reading details about the seed if you haven't completed your run.
  • As Cogmind now has multiple difficulty modes and challenges which will affect the world generation, by default it is assumed everyone is playing on regular difficulty with no challenges enabled. You are free to use whichever settings you wish, but if you intend on discussing it, be sure to specify what difficulty/challenges you're using!

Well, after last week's complete destruction at the hands of
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I was excited to give it another go.

Things started off swell! So swell, in fact, that I decided to take the path through the mines. Boom, as soon as I entered -10/Mines, I get notified of a demolisher squad (? I think this is what they're called, but please correct me if not) dispatched to combat a derelict invasion. I knew what it meant: fast derelicts with flamers vs unaware grenadiers. Get me out now. Unfortunately (or fortunately) a Layout(Zone) showed me an exit...just on the other side of a wall, and the only way out was through the battle. I helplessly pounded the wall with light cannon fire, but to no avail. Reluctantly, I moved towards the fighting and found some very useful loot: a bore cannon! Tier 5 cannon on -10! Overjoyed, I went back to my wall, tore a hole in it with the bore cannon, and escaped to -9\materials. Mats and the subsequent mines were uneventful until a derelict emerged from the shadows offering refuge! The stairs led straight to Zion (-7)! Overjoyed, I got some gear, got imprinted, got some friends, and made my way to the proximity caves. Proxy caves were a breeze as my brothers and I waltzed into Factory.

Here...our story turns. Overjoyed at having friends (and lots of factory intel), I quickly gained more followers. But with greater power, comes greater responsibility; a responsibility I shirked as I flew through factory. Eventually, I came to a room with a Beast. "We can take it!" Little did I notice my escort had shrunk significantly. Additionally, a trap was sprung and another round of crazy derelicts came through followed closely by a new demolisher squad! We were soon overrun. I dumped my gear and flew for the nearest exit. I made it to the caves with 32 core left, and I was soon finished off :(

Let this be a lesson, when you have an entourage, play slower, not faster. There are tons of additional factors to take into account besides "my guys are invincible, we can win anything."

I'll admit allies often get me killed as often as they help xD. Not a thing against allies, since they're quite effective in the right hands, but having them around does require that you change your mindset (and not necessarily in a "we are invincible!" kinda way, which I do, too :P).

First game I've played in a long time since I've been spending most Cogmind related time on creating Sequell like database and query api for Cogmind score data.

Started out aiming to play treads/combat, which meant I often had no intel on stairs and often had to take a staircase because the situation on the current level was starting to get out of hand. This happened in -7 Factory which led me to -7 Storage ("Oh dear I don't want to be here."). Actually did quite a good job of fighting my way through Storage due to quickly finding a bunch of prototype launcher stockpiles. Again things were starting to rapid fall apart as I was nearing the exit... until I found a batch of 6 Troopers behind a door that had already been opened. I figured I'd have to rewire them, so I attempted that not realising I had my Axe activated. I axed one of them and apparently that scared the rest of them into my servitude :p
Again -6 Factory getting too hot left me no choice but to head into Extension. I found A7 right away and it + my Guided Missile Launcher scrapped our way through to the Cetus entrance (using the trick of digging/exploding a path along the top so we didn't have to go down to fight the Behemoths). Speaking of allies not being much help... I've noticed with A7 or purple allies in general, you can get them to disengage from combat and follow you if you lead them towards where you want them to go (in this case A7 and I went through our exploded top-side path and let it cave in on all our persuers). Cetus guards went down surprisingly easy with Guided Missile Launcher depsite their resistance... and then building Enhanced Grunts let us make our way through Hub to -5 Factory without too much trouble (I didn't want to go to Hub... I thought the staircase locations were always the same but I guess not haha). Ended up in -5 Upper Caves again not having much choice in the matter. Once I realised it was leading to Warlord I decided to just take the easy exit back to -4 Factory. Found a quick exit into -3 Research but was again forced into an early staircase... knowing my luck it was -3 Armory ("Oh god not again".) My hopes were very low given my state as I enterred.


The rest of the game was just a scramble to get away from enemies and try and get back to a reasonable state so I could progress normally but alas I got cornered 4 or 5 times in -2 Research and it was all over. Very fun run despite my lack of predominance for the majority of it.

That's one of the reasons I like doing the W visit, so that even if in trouble on reaching -2, it's like a practically guaranteed comeback :)

But yeah with treads you will often end up taking just whatever exits you find, making it harder to plan for a specific route...

I was 95% sure I wasn't gonna make it through that second depth of -5 Upper Caves alive so it was an easy choice. If it was heading to Zh though I would've gambled on that 5% because I'm pretty keen to progress along some pathways down there that have eluded me thus far :3
Treads life is tough sometimes but it often ends up producing my most thrilling and exciting runs... in fact I think I'm gonna start another one now  :)

Hehe, definitely one of the main reasons I prefer slower builds--lots of excitement! Does kinda suck to have to bow out of a cave once you realize you won't survive the longer route back though.
