This week's seed: SurgeMachineInsulator



The Weekly Seed is open to anyone, and we encourage you to share your experiences, stories, and tactics over the course of your run.

The rules are as follows:
  • The Weekly Seed begins from the date this thread is posted and lasts about seven days.
  • Make sure you are running the correct version of Cogmind (see thread subject).
  • Enter the seed and abort your current game to initiate the seed (more details are below).
  • Verify you are not running the tutorial and that the screenshots below match your game.
  • Play through the game once. This is a friendly event and we are all honest people.
  • When finished, post your scoresheet here (it should be the newest file in /scores) and any other screenshots/stories/strategies you wish to share with the community.
  • If you want to share details about the seed or your approach, make sure you use spoiler tags.
  • Due to the spoilerific nature of this thread, be sure to avoid reading details about the seed if you haven't completed your run.
  • As Cogmind now has multiple difficulty modes and challenges which will affect the world generation, by default it is assumed everyone is playing on regular difficulty with no challenges enabled. You are free to use whichever settings you wish, but if you intend on discussing it, be sure to specify what difficulty/challenges you're using!

I just started this run, and hope to keep this updated as I go (especially since I can only really play in short increments).

So far, things are swell! At -9 I decided to venture into the mines. I've got treads, EM weapons, and I'm pretty happy so far. I have noticed with this particular seed that a trapper build could be really successful. I found multiple datajacks on the first floor as well as a stash of trap extractors on the next. I'm hoping someone journeys down that path and keeps us updated :D!

That's it for now (pretty boring, I know), but I'll make sure to post updates as I progress.

UPDATE:
Things are still going swell! During my adventures in the mine, I made a friend who gifted me with a mining laser. Together, we delved, but soon...the drums...the drums in the deep... We stood our ground against the assault, but, while victorious, I was now alone again. With her dying breath (beep?), she showed me a derilict log detailing -7\Zion. My goal was clear.

Once in -8\Materials, I pumped up my weapon and and utility slots and started looking for more storage. I've been on treads with only a single small storage unit. Alas, I found the exit without any additional storage. I decided to be brave and continue exploring and... lo and behold, right around the corner, two haulers ripe for pillaging. As they exploded, they revealed 2 medium storage units and a plethora of prototype weapons. Augmented and filled to the brim with firepower, I took the stairs to -7, ready to find salvation in Zion.

UPDATE 2:
I made it through to the lower caves, and I don't remember anything terribly interesting happening. :/ Unfortunately, I won't be able to finish this run anytime soon as I'm going out of town. I finished it with a win, but I won't be posting the scoresheet. I had a hacking build up through till late endgame, where I switched to a powerful melee build. Fabbed 23 items that run.

This is the first time I went for a true melee build with all the stuff you'd want for it. I must say it works really well when you get it going.

I just started my run this morning. Exciting start to say the least for this newbie. I'll post my score sheet when I am done. I made it to my first evolution and stopped.

I just started my own gaming channel on Youtube and I am also recording these seed runs as well as normal runs too.

So I just finished the seed run with what started out as a combat build with some stealthiness using sensor array. I was able to blast through all those enemies with my energy weapons along with cooling injectors to prevent heat problem. That seems to work out really well throughout the first half of my run. After visiting Zion to get imprinted, I stumbled across the branch that I haven't visited in a long, long time....Warlord!

With my superior equipment loadout from the Warlord branch, I was able to take out a lot of enemies with ease. At the end of the proxy cave, I found another large army of disabled robots! They were mostly bruisers and a few hunters, but heck, I rewired them all because why not? :)

So that's what I had upon reaching Research: a few hunters, and a lot of slow melee attackers on treads. What a weird army to lead...

After some exploring in Research, I saw another branch in the horizon: the Armory. Based on my past experience, it wasn't really that hard to go through, so I thought to myself, "Why not?" before I entered.

The best part about Armory is the chance to find a bunch of free allies. And guess what? I found this!

Trying to lead a large army is pretty difficult because you can't be that stealthy, as in avoiding fights. However, you can still hide your whole army into a single room after detecting incoming enemies using a long-range sensor array. Trying to do so to avoid an incoming ARC had saved me a few fights.

Also, make sure you don't let a demolisher see your army! It's better to fight him one-on-one before bringing in the rest of your army. You can let them chill at another location, and then after killing him, you can run back to your allies to clean up the rest of the robots. I minimized a lot of damage on my crew after doing this.

However, despite my best effort, my army slowly shrunk after each battle. Programmers especially made my army strategy harder because they can assimilate and reboot. Because of all of these factors, my army slowly but eventually shrunk to nothing, and I had to fight all these enemies by myself! That's when I finally realized my situation is becoming problematic.

When I saw myself fighting 10+ robots at the same time, I knew I couldn't keep on fighting. Looking at my inventory, I only had a few weapons left, so I think it's time to say farewell to my combat build. Farewell! :'(


I hate to say this, but being a good combat player needs to know when to ditch Plan A and go right to Plan B, which is "fleeing out of this place!" So I had to pause to see which items to keep (max. 4 items and 3 weight mass), and which to throw away. As a stealth build, I definitely needed my sensor array and terrain scanner, so I kept them safe in my pocket. A single propulsion and a storage unit are also ok too, given my current loadout. After that, I picked up a flight propulsion from a dead swarmer and then scrammed! If I couldn't find the exit soon, I knew I would be overwhelmed by all these enemies. But fortunately, I found it pretty quickly.

After reaching the next Research level, I desperately tried to rebuild myself. I tried crushing some neutral robots for their parts, but that didn't work. (I should've kept a weapon!) Soon, I came across a group of grunts who shot down my sensor array, so I had to flee blindly before coming across the next branch area: the Quarantine. I was pretty worried about going there, but I took a dive anyway because I wanted to escape from all those enemies.

Fortunately, it's not a bad experience in that branch, but it's not a good one either! I attracted a lot of attention after opening the door I shouldn't have opened, drawing prototype enemies toward my direction. I was able to get out of the place before getting into more trouble, but still, I didn't have any propulsion with me after ascending to Access. :-[


I felt pretty hopeless in that situation. I came across enemies after enemies: swarmers, hunters, programmers, with no means to fight them all, or flee away from them. I felt like I had no chance of winning as I kept on running and running...and running. But then, after I came across the place with two terminals, something clicked on me: I forgot that I have Z-hacks! Immediately, I ran toward the terminal and gained access to it. I called down Z-Light allies, and then a Programmer squad at the second terminal. And then after that, things went from worst to fantastic.


Those allies are so powerful, I didn't have to lift a finger! They did a great job at obliterating all those enemies, and guess what? More loots! I started to pick up all that was remaining: Glidesystems, sensor array (from destroyed watcher), hackware, weapons, everything I needed to pick up myself again. That was truly amazing.

After I finished looting, I wandered around a bit...before, lo and behold, the exit is nearby! I saw a stash of powerful launchers and armor in a nearby room before I proceeded the ultimate victory. Hurray!!!  ;D

That was an amazing run. It was a huge roller-coaster ride from good, to bad, to horrible, to WOW! If only I remember to Z-hack earlier, things would have been much more smooth. But still, I've been enjoying this run, and I hope I can keep on improving on my combat play.

Also, Zion is, hands-down, the best branch in the world! And Armory, I need to think a little more about you next time.  ;)

Wow this seed's been getting some attention :D

I haven't read through the details yet to avoid spoiling my own run since I've yet to do this seed, but I'm about to start mine now and should probably go for a win... (only have one Beta 2 run so far and made it to -1 where I suddenly got crushed xD)

I knew my fear of Behemoths was warranted... I usually run from them but this time decided to fight. It didn't go terribly bad, but the patrols that showed up while I was fighting it really made a big mess of things :/

My main problem (I was already aware of...) was a lack of any cooling, so long confrontations would definitely overheat me. That slowed down my Behemoth assault a bit too much.

Made it out, though didn't get to take advantage of the special cave stuff, whatever was at the end of that branch. And... now I have to rebuild ASAP!

(I wanted to take the back entrance, but there was a Behemoth down there I didn't want to play with :/)

Well, the front entranc felt a bit menacing, so I instead went to get some toys I passed up earlier and set up a little trap...

Base went pretty well after hacking in through the back door and taking out the Watchers with a missile before they could alert everything!

Then I had more or less an ally build passing through Testing. +Power and a shield, anyway, with AOE TH defense in reserve if the situation calls for it.

It was a fairly high-scoring run, mostly in the last few floors really where I spent a lot of time wading through squads. The first two-thirds of the run didn't earn many points.

I located the Access exit really early with all my hacking, so I knew where it was (not far away!), it was just a question of getting to it. For that I kept going back and forth around the west side, first to the south to find it was a dead end, then around to the north to find that was the front door, then to the south again because I wanted to hack in the back way. That's when I blasted through walls and tried to hack it but had lost a bit too much hackware by then and failed. So I finally again went back around to the north side to fight through. (And each time I did that I passed by the third Behemoth that was stationed nearby :P)

If only I'd realized the guards could no longer penetrate that barrier... When I faced them I had a full loadout and lots of spare parts. I'm rather surprised that about 12 fusion bombs couldn't take out even one of the Behemoths! Pretty amazing how down to the wire that got, and I was just a hair on the side of failure xD

Unfortunately I didn't make it past -7. I kept moving hoping to find the exit when I had triggered a couple alerts. It ended... poorly.
