This week's seed: Strange Surrounds

Alpha 14 has arrived. Can you brave the strangest of places and live to tell the tale?

The Weekly Seed is open to anyone, and we encourage you to share your experiences, stories, and tactics over the course of your run.

The rules are as follows:
  • The Weekly Seed begins from the date this thread is posted and lasts about seven days.
  • Make sure you are running the correct version of Cogmind (see thread subject).
  • Enter the seed and abort your current game to initiate the seed (more details are below).
  • Verify you are not running the tutorial and that the screenshots below match your game.
  • Play through the game once. This is a friendly event and we are all honest people.
  • When finished, post your scoresheet here (it should be the newest file in /scores) and any other screenshots/stories/strategies you wish to share with the community.
  • If you want to share details about the seed or your approach, make sure you use spoiler tags.
  • Due to the spoilerific nature of this thread, be sure to avoid reading details about the seed if you haven't completed your run.
  • As Cogmind now has multiple difficulty modes and challenges which will affect the world generation, by default it is assumed everyone is playing on regular difficulty with no challenges enabled. You are free to use whichever settings you wish, but if you intend on discussing it, be sure to specify what difficulty/challenges you're using!

Press F1 to go to the MENU, select OPTIONS, select Seed, and enter this week's seed:




Select GAME, select ABORT:




If you have followed the steps [Manual seed applied: Strange Surrounds] should display in the log window.

I intended to venture into the deepest cave (which I think I know where it is), but I ended up at Data Miner instead. I've never been there before so I had to check it out.

Some thoughts about Data Miner, so spoiler ahead:

After entering the Proximity Cave, things went downward really fast. I was playing as a combat-build Cogmind with sensor array. But after losing the sensor (during a fight), it became hard for me to decide which route is safe or not. Eventually, I accidentally opened a hidden door leading to a sentry and awakened bots. The sentry then called in for reinforcement, and soon, I was surrounded by 10+ enemies in the open! I lost all my guns and cannons in an attempt to kill off the melee enemies (they're so sturdy!) so I had to pull out my missiles to destroy them at point-blank range. At the end, I was left with only an axe as my weapon and little health. After encountering a group of pests (again!), it was all over. It's just impossible to outrun them. :(

P.S. If you're holding a melee weapon, bumping to an unpowered robot (in the cave) will attack it by default instead of rewiring it. Would it be better to rewire it instead by default?

Hehe, 380 minutes, wow. Spending a lot of time looking at stats or something? Or frequently stopping to do something else real quick? (The idle timer will exclude most idle time, but not if you're repeatedly taking some action then stopping for a short while.)

That's not exactly a large number of actions, either.

Your score currently on the leaderboard, all the way to Armory, took significantly less time. In general it looks like you're spending a lot of time fleeing though? :P

I played for a little while, went out to dinner and had a few drinks, came back and watched a tv show, and then continued my game (and promptly died). I assume that has something to do with it being a 380 minute game :P

Yeah my playstyle so far has been mostly trying to obtain fast propulsion parts and jump from map to map in as few turns as possible, outrunning my enemies. I've had a few games where this strategy went (in my opinion) quite well, but during this run I was never really able to build a good loadout. Consequently, I spent a lot of time running on core speed, desperate to find a cache of useful parts before I ran out of integrity  ;D

Hm, it really shouldn't be counting that much idle time, but it does look like that happened here... (it's happened in a few instances in the past, and for this release I redid the timing system to see if I could improve it, but it looks like it's still not perfect :/)

Endless running is certainly dangerous, but with enough experience (and maybe some luck :P) you can even win that way.
