Weekly Seed #67 [Alpha 12] [Seed: Terra Incognita]
« on: December 01, 2016, 06:02:02 AM »

This week's seed: Terra Incognita

The great unknown awaits...

The Weekly Seed is open to anyone, and we encourage you to share your experiences, stories, and tactics over the course of your run.

The rules are as follows:
  • The Weekly Seed begins from the date this thread is posted and lasts about seven days.
  • Make sure you are running the correct version of Cogmind (see thread subject).
  • Enter the seed and abort your current game to initiate the seed (more details are below).
  • Verify you are not running the tutorial and that the screenshots below match your game.
  • Play through the game once. This is a friendly event and we are all honest people.
  • When finished, post your scoresheet here (it should be the newest file in /scores) and any other screenshots/stories/strategies you wish to share with the community.
  • If you want to share details about the seed or your approach, make sure you use spoiler tags.
  • Due to the spoilerific nature of this thread, be sure to avoid reading details about the seed if you haven't completed your run.

Good luck and have fun!

No screenshots because I have a game in progress already and I don't like messing around with save files. :)

HOW TO ENTER A SEED

Press F1 to go to the MENU, select OPTIONS, select Seed, and enter this week's seed:

Select GAME, select ABORT:

If you have followed the steps [Manual seed applied: Terra Incognita] should display in the log window.

Congratulations on entering the seed, now get in there!

So, I guess I did exactly the opposite of what the seed is about, given that I took a direct shot straight for the surface (and made it). Was a really fun run, though!

I streamed the whole thing, and saved these videos permanently to Twitch as highlights. You can watch part 1 here, and part 2 here.

I was trying to focus on a thermal combat build for the new heat transfer mechanic, and ended up spending a good chunk of the game doing that and crushing all opposition, even switching to a hover build for the first time after taking out a pair of Demolishers. Still rocking that hover build in -4:

Then came a fateful corridor in -2/Research where I fought Hunter after Hunter and Programmer after Programmer, surviving the last group by sprinting across a room and grabbing a Force Lance to skewer them all.

As you can see, after rebuilding from all the rubble from that encounter my "combat" build was a little weird, with tons of processors and not much else.(I was also short on storage for a good floor or so.)

I later carried that trusty lance almost to the surface--too important as backup to let it go :P

I searched all over the place and almost succumbed to attrition--that layout was crazy--but with only 100 core remaining found an exit behind a Sentry.

And that turned out to be the only branch I took the whole run. Found myself in Testing with no core... BUT

Access was not much trouble (alert overnerfed in Alpha 12...), which is good because my build was pretty crappy by that time:

(Well, I say crappy, but that was a heck of a lot of targeting--it was actually 5x Adv. at its peak, something I've never done before, all those stacking processors just sort of... happened. I normally wouldn't use more than 2-3, but I admit it was nice to be able to not even care about movement and other factors that affect targetin--everything was just getting hit :P) But seriously, if the alert level weren't so lenient this time I probably wouldn't have survived those issues in -2 :P. According to the stats I only made it to 7% Alert 4 despite all the chaos.

Great run overall!

Spoiler: Score: 30,196 (win) (click to show/hide)

I know there's already a new seed, but I finished this one a week ago, so I guess I better post this late than never.  ;D

This is actually one of the most fun runs I had! I was able to reach -2 Research level, the highest ascent I've ever climbed so far (mostly because of the alert level nerf), and with a combat build! The best moment I had was when I reached Extension branch, which I guess you could already imagine:

And then... CHARRRRRRGE!!!!

Boy, that was fun.  :D

But the one lesson I learned is knowing when you should dig excavate or not. It's fun to dig through walls, and this is the proper way to do it:

With the exit so close by, you should just go for it.

But this is NOT the proper way to do it!

Here I thought I could just avoid all the troubles in the world by digging...

Until this happens.  :-[

Aaaaaaand I got screwed:

But good game overall! I think I should just blast everything away. Maybe I could've won like that. :P

That was a pretty nutters run Dark. Soon as I saw http://imgur.com/a/CNU4K I was shouting NO! It doesn't take many such experiences to turn you right off major digging like that.

Oh man, nice run. And yes you learned a valuable lesson there! Digging is good, to an extent :)
