Ununsept posted a bunch of art done for CDDA in this thread, but the conversation started going off on a wider tangent involving how to add it to that game, the format, and more, so I've separated that out into its own thread.

A death screen I made entirely in REXPaint quite a few years ago, following the Java tutorial. Also finangled the engine to read rexpaint files and used it to draw my maps. Good times, and thank you for this wonderful tool mr kyzrati ^^

Looking forward to using Rexpain in my next game.

I managed to find time to polish an old pet project of mine, a cross-platform C99 library to create unicode text graphics easily, on UTF-8 capable terminals.
I have adopted REXPaint as a natively supported editor to create assets.
I've used the project as a learning workbench over the years till it became a thing of its own, so it's a bit of niche tool. It requires a basic level of proficiency in both C and CMake.
It can do realtime games too, if the user knows what is doing. The repo provides some examples.
It's called VisualT, and the docs are published on readthedocs.

I've made the logo, the VTCat, with REXPaint :)

It's a bit too messy but captures the vibe of a mold-infested sprawling foresty kind of thing, looks a bit better zoomed out. Still very happy with it.

Yeah it's an interesting thing about ASCII art, how the zoom level greatly affects the perception.This is also why with my own games I tend to use a smaller cell size, even though this also has a negative impact on readability. Gotta strike a balance between the two...

Here are my new fonts, they are free to use and distribute (license: CC BY 3.0).
Important: fonts make extensive use of half-blocks (from cp437).

Oh that's pretty cool, in fact I'm not sure I've seen people make fonts in REXPaint yet, just for it, obviously two very different things :P

As a potential reusable resource you're sharing this seems like something that's worth having its own thread, even. (Not quite the kind of thing I'd put on the resources page like the other fonts though.)

Yes, these arr not fonts for use in RP,  just bunch of glyph sprites for use maybe in title screen / menu if game uses similar to cp437 half block glyphs. Definitely not RP resources, just creation.

This piece caused a serious distraction from my dev road map. A game controller mapping tool, still I'm not sure if I'm going to use it but I think it looks pretty nice. Esthetics are somewhat more scifi than medieval though.

Oh wow yeah that looks great. Definitely more of a sci-fi style to it, though it is technically a piece of tech so not so easy to do otherwise if you want it to more resemble what it actually is :P

For my first attempt at ascii art, I basically turned an image of Snake from Metal Gear into ASCII.

I was largely inspired by Dee's ascii art from the REXpaint gallery, so I tried to use pixel art for the basic shapes and use ascii for the details of the image.

I hope to make a game that uses ascii characters for graphics and have been doing different tests/mockups using it. The process has been extremely helpful in determining what is possible for my game.

Oh wow these are really pretty! When sharing it's nice to also provide image exports so people can browse them more easily, although to be honest giving out the .xp file is great, too (something not as many bother with), for those who want to play around with it and/or just better see how it was put together.

Your concepts look solid. I love putting together stuff like this, such an easy way to do it compared to actually building something :P
