So, of course most everyone has seen my own REXPaint ASCII art--certainly in the game! No sense in rehashing that stuff... instead I can show something else I made last year: a knight to defend ozymandias79's castle!

I've always wanted to have a thread like this :). We'll gradually get more activity here as more REXPaint users show up. I've yet to announce that there's finally a dedicated forum area for it.

This was something I put together a few months ago while I was waiting for the Alpha to come out.  I'm not that keen on the shading anymore and the logo has changed since this was created.  It was felt that "Cogmino" didn't have the same ring to it, but it will always be "Cogmino" to me :)

"Cogmino," yeah, can't believe it went on so long like that, too. I was too focused on making letters squarish and didn't really pay attention to readability for people who didn't "already know."

I always really liked the style you used to redesign the logo--it reminds me of a frame-stop of the title animation. For a bit I even considered changing the title logo to something like that after seeing how "stylish" it was, but then decided that going with a more flat style for the foreground would work better to keep the letters clear and cohesive.

And your additional background elements/circuitry are really nice, too :)

I feel The flat style is more of a "classic" look.  I'm really happy you stuck with it as the shaded style is more of a fad :)

I'm still very happy with the background of the "ALPHA" part.  I've also put together a 0-9 REXPAINT template for video numbering.  I might post it when I get home from work.

I've still got this as my desktop background.  When I told my partner I'd picked up the game she said, "Isn't it called Cogmino?" Still cracks me up every time :D

As promised earlier here is the numbering template I created.

Question: I'm a beginner at using forums. How do I insert an image into the text box rather than adding it as an attachment?

Looks like it could be a room in the future of X@COM, ozymandias79 :)

I will always remember that, too.

And I didn't know it, but after two years of development, I was talking about the title logo change with my wife and she, too, told me she thought it was "Cogmino" the entire time... because at home she has always just called it "your game" and we never actually said it. Ha.

As promised earlier here is the numbering template I created.

We're using imgur to host, then just linking to that.

That avatar is wonderful! And what a good idea... Looks like it's caught on.

ozymandias that is a really cool avatar, too. Sweet circuitry.

Everyone on the forums needs to do this now... it should be a requirement :D

It's a fun style, eh? :)

That looks great (and the perfect name!), though I'd say the rightmost branch looks a bit off.

You guys are really good with this. I have a hard time making squares, and there's an ASCII symbol for that...

Was messing about and tried to make a tread driven robot.  Was inspired by Armored Core

Oooh, definitely reminds me of Armored Core. I like the colors, too--ASCII art can look great with just a few colors, another reason I like it because it takes me a while to pick colors...

Haha... just practice. It's easier to learn and do something cool than it is with pixel art. (Trust me, I'm not the greatest artist but I practiced off and on over months to come up with Cogmind's art style, which in the end mostly follows a few rules that I developed to create the art in an almost "algorithmic" fashion.)

This one is probably my favourite.  Did you end up turning it into a game?

Hey chooseusername, nice to have you around the forums!

Those are some great mockups, especially the second and third one. Are these concepts for the new RL you're working on?

@endlessblaze: It sure is pretty fun... that's how I came up with Cogmind's art style, just doodling off and on for months until what were originally pretty terrible designs started morphing into some really cool stuff. I started that early on in the project because at the time I wasn't even sure I could come up with a style with which I could reasonably represent so many hundreds of distinct parts and have them still look good. If it didn't work out I was just going to go without art at all, but I'm glad it went as well as it did.
