BOO  :-[ this run was a bit of a disappointment.

Things started off pretty well as I tried to go for a bicycle hacker build. The idea was to stick with two prop slots (wheel!!) and put all the evolutions into utilities; that way I could equip extra storage, sensors, or armor while sacrificing speed and mobility.

The first few floors went well, through I didn't quite find enough hacking suites. At sublevel 7 I headed into the caves hoping to find DM. On the way, some bad luck and worse choices led to a couple ambushes and rough spots.

Hey! Since spring finals are done, I jumped back in with my first run of Beta 6! (unfortunately, summer school has started up  :'()

This was a super fun run for me. I got to see 4 (4!) branches that I hadn't seen before and had a really good time with the achievements.

Right off the bat, I knew I wanted to do a combat run, so I started picking up as much stuff and kinetic weapons as I could. Most of the early game was an infowar type build, with my utility slots filled with sensors, large storage units, and a targeting computer (so good!).

My first achievement was...Loot Pinata! (Destroy a Hauler) followed by Crack Shot (Hit 10 shots in a row).  ;D I had a good time messing up mats.

In sublevel 9, I went into storage, looking for some good loot. I managed to stir up some trouble with the newly implemented drone release feature, which was a whole lot of fun.

At any rate, it was a marvelous run with a decent score to boot!

This run will eventually be uploaded to my youtube channel. Check it out for a bunch of Cogmind content.

That's great news!

I've been in and out, school's ramping up, which means less playing and more paper writing :(

Hey man! Great sitrep, looking forward to achievements. Be healthy for once!

Also, AFD mode was so fun. It was great seeing everyone try to figure out a way around the handicap of 'too many launchers'.

Woo! My second win!!

After seeing Pimski's flight setup video here, I decided to give it a shot!

Unlike Pim, I really enjoyed the first few levels; running around on treads looking for the specific items I wanted and blowing stuff up. On sublevel 8 I even went into storage! Unfortunately, I didn't get much out of it :(

At sublevel 7, I made the switch to flight and started getting around pretty quick. Looking back, I really should have spent more time on -7 hacking terminals for good schematics and things of that nature. I think it would have really helped me later on. Anyway I went into the lower caves.

Spoiler: Lower Caves (click to show/hide)

At sublevel 6, I started getting careless. I took risks I didn't need to and the result was that I didn't get to stay and hang out as much as I wanted to. Similar to -7, I think I would have benefited from additional time here. I skipped the branches on this level intentionally.

Sublevel 5 was similar to sublevel 6, and I soon made my way into the upper caves.

This was a SUPER fun run. I'm really excited to polish up my flying skills and get some of that juicy juicy lore!

I'm kinda working backwards since I ran this AFTER weekly seed 115 (and did much better!) Even so, I found this run...lacking.

Right from the get-go, I didn't have a real plan in mind, besides trying to find Z, so I just kinda meandered around killin some stuff, gettin stuff, goin places. You know, normal robot stuff.

I ended up heading into the mines again (gasp!) and got a little help from a friend :)

Welp...this is embarrassing. I don't remember the last time I died on -10  :'(

I've taken to habit heading towards the mines once I get some sort of explosive weapon. This time, an assembled infestation had already begun, but I spawned in right next to the demolisher response squad grenadiers. Explosive weapons weren't gonna help a ton. I positioned myself poorly to handle them and BOOM!

I say it all the time, something interesting always happens in the mines :)

Hey everybody! I've been working on this seed for a few weeks and it DID NOT DISSAPOINT!

Since Beta 5 is the 'Zionic Revolution', I decided to shoot for Z to try out the new mechanics. The first couple levels went swell, I even had fun in the mines on both sublevels 9 and 10. Fortunately, a derelict log found me the location of Z, sublevel 7. Soon enough, I was there, and in pretty good shape too.

Hello everybody, this is nuzcraft and I just got my first win :) and on stream at that :D

I wanted to play this run differently than I ever had before. This started in the scrapyard, where I equipped wheels instead of the more traditional legs or treads. -10/Mats was very good to me, providing a multitude of wheels and a grenade launcher (which would stay with me most of the game). My first evolution was a propulsion and utility slot, because I knew I wanted to get some sensors online and start working toward a hacker build. I left -9/Mats in much the same state that I entered, except that I'd augmented my arsenal with a rocket launcher and bolted on some armored wheels.

Leaving -9/Materials:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Once again, I evolved a propulsion and utility slot heading up to -8/Mats. After a couple firefights, I (gasp) started to run low on wheels, and began picking up legs as backup. In total my time in -8/Mats was very short, and  managed to pick up a chainsword right before ascending to -7/Factory. That chainsword would soon become my best buddy and stay with me till the end. I evolved 2 utility slots and began making my way through factory. A short time in, I busted a hauler to find 3 prototype flight units: improved cesium ion thrusters. I was eager to make the switch to flight, and reconciled my parts down to a manageable level with only one medium storage unit.

Initial Flight Build:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With this build, I soon found an exit to -6/Factory. Once again, I evolved 2 utility slots and set to work. Going through -6/Factory seemed like a bit of a slog. I was trying not to be seen, while managing my energy and hacking as much as possible. After quite bit of back and forth (even finding the exit to extension) I made my way to the lower caves in an attempt to find DM.

I'd managed to find long range sensors and advanced signal interpreters on -6, so much of my time in the caves was spent sneaking around. Unfortunately, at one point my only way through was blocked by a squad of swarmers and a guardian, with a beast to the east.

Lower Caves Gauntlet:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With the help of my chat, I managed to kill most of the swarmers with the rocket launcher, then aggro the guardian with an EMP Blaster and lure him around a cave formation so I could slip in behind. Unfortunately for me, the exit was guarded by a pretty serious looking squad.

Lower Caves Exit:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I used my superior propulsion and speed to fly right over their heads into the second part of the lower caves….which spawned me right in front of a patrol :(

Lower Caves 2 Entrance:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This was bad…real bad. Unsure of what to do, I few past them to the north, and quickly found more bad robots to deter me. I had to stand my ground. I parked myself against a wall and start hitting them hard with my EMP Blaster. I took a couple volleys, but terminally corrupted a veteran and soldier :D I also got a smidge of loot!

Lower Caves EMP Volley:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The rest of the lower caves was pretty uneventful until I found a strange alcove in the wall with a barrier. I slashed through the barrier to find an alien artifact! Equipping it, I got the message 'INITIALIZER ACTIVATES AND LATCHES INTO THE GROUND'. At this point, I was really confused. I knew that it had to do something, but I also knew I was going to be leaving the level pretty soon, so I smacked it with my chainsword.

Alien Artifacts don't like bein' smacked:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It was not particularly happy with me, and I still don't know what it does :D After a bit more exploring, I was pretty sure I found the exit, but it was guarded by a beast. I'd been savvy, switching off propulsion when recouping energy, but right before trying to blitz past the beast, I accidentally activated my propulsion armor treads instead of my flight units! :o Even so, I made it past the beast and into Zion!

Zion was the same as ever. I did a little restocking and got imprinted before heading out into the proximity caves. I was really looking forward to using some of the intel related Z hacks instead of just the roster ones.

Prox Caves, at least the beginning, was very interesting because I had an entourage. Where I'd normally be avoiding conflict at almost any cost, my friends were pretty intent on battling it out. In the end, I simply left them to rust and started exploring for the exit. Upon reaching the exit many turns later, I'm greeted by the return of my prodigal sons! Somehow a couple of my friends not only survived, but made their way to me through the chaos.

The prodigal sons return!:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Moving on up to -5/Factory, I evolved additional power and propulsion slots. I got some info from a couple Z hacks and managed to upgrade some of my flight units to cooled nuclear pulse thrusters!

Cooled Thruster Build:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Shortly thereafter, I ascended to -4/Factory, evolving 2 utility slots. In factory, I quickly realized that I was vastly under equipped for any sort of legitimate hacking build, so I set out to use my newfound Zionite hacking skills to get me more hacking suites. Unfortunately, I neither found many terminals, nor was very good at hacking, so we soon booked it to the upper caves.

Branchy Spoilers:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I evolved an additional propulsion and utility slot for my adventure into research. I've only been to sublevel three a couple times, and was well aware that this may be an uphill battle, but was still cornered fairly early on. I ran away quickly, and had to improvise much of the beginning exploration. I got to a couple good terminals, and managed to hack schematics for an improved hacking suite as well as branch access points. From there, I gathered a bit of extra hackware and headed towards quarantine with maximum recklessness.

Endgame Spoilers:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It was such a great experience, I'm looking forward to finding more lore and more ways to win as I keep exploring!

Hey everyone, I had a freaking BLAST with this run! Unlike Kyz, I can only play is short segments, so this was was actually played across 7 sittings and took a whopping 7.21 hours! It was worth the wait because this run put me in the top 20 of the high scores list (as of this writing  ;D). I also streamed this run on my https://www.twitch.tv/nuzcraft and plan to stream my future runs, though they won't all be with commentary.

From the beginning, this was my first run in Beta 4, and even though I was originally planning a bicycle build, a stash of improved treads in the new -10 lured me back. I took to the mines on both -10 and -9, but I don't remember anything crazy interesting happening, though I may have fought my way through an infestation ;). The first couple factory floors were fruitful and I had a pretty good combat build going. Then, on -6, I entered the lower caves (dun dun DUN).

The first half of the caves was a breeze. I had rockets. Life was good. At one point in the second half of the caves, I tried to skirt by some enemies unseen...and was spotted. No biggie, I can handle them. Then a second patrol came in from a different direction and I was pinned. A combination of poor cover, lots of bad guys, and poor heat management meant I had to make a run for it. Virtually nakey, I found a branch entrance to...DM!

DM was fun and informative, but I was leary of the prox. caves that were to come. Sure enough, prox. caves were rough. At one point I had to choose between trying to skirt past a behemoth or a patrol...I chose the behemoth and it turned out okay  8) Later on, I ran away from progs and patrols and made it back to factory with 65 core. That was quite the adventurous branch :)

I managed to get restocked into a pretty fancy cannon build with some heavy treads and proton cannons, which didn't do us much good when we fell into the waste :'( I swapped over to thermal and kinetic weapons and managed to take out two crushers before a third started the beat down. I somehow managed to out-tread the crushers with a semblance of a cannon build intact, a rare feat indeed.

Back to factory sublevel 5, the restock began and I immediately found an exit (like within 100 turns) Welcome to factory sublevel 4. At this point, the items that made it through the waste were starting to show their wear, and the multitude of hunter squad lead me to move towards a kinetic leg build rockin' coil guns and myomer legs. I found a stash of micro-nuke launchers 8) and took a couple of them (good thing too!) as I then exited into the spooooky upper caves.

The upper caves were quite exciting, as I took advice from bugsniper to nuke patrols liberally. Seriously though, nuclear justice performed excellently in the caves, I can't recommend it enough. I found the exit to the second upper caves and then an exit to a mysterious branch with red walls. What could it be? It was W!

Spoiler: Mr. W (click to show/hide)

Research started out quite fruitful. Bugsniper convinced me to go for a hover build, which made sense since I was struggling in the propulsion department. At this point, my suboptimal mechanics really showed through, and some tips from bugsniper were really helpful in fine tuning my play (they mostly involved positioning in combat, so I guess I should be reading DDarkray's Combat Positioning Guide ;D Wandering around was going pretty well until I got cornered by a couple patrols and some errors on my part destroyed any cover I had. I ran for it and managed to find a close exit into a brand new branch...testing!

Spoiler: testing (click to show/hide)

In the end, this run was amazing. It was my longest and best run yet, and I learned a lot about the game!

You can check out my full scoresheet here

I really enjoyed this writeup and will try to do long ones like this in the future (they take a long time though!)

Check me out on twitter, youtube, and twitch! I'm try to upload Cogmind vids every M, W, F and am planning on streaming more often!

Hey! This weekly seed was great!

I made my way through the first couple mats levels pretty quickly and decided to go on a mining trip on -9. After exploring a bit, some nice fellow showed me the way to salvation...ZION. I geared up, got imprinted, got my friends, and headed to the prox. caves. This is where things got dicey. I kept running into patrols and my entourage was dwindling. Since I shortcutted (shortcut?) my way from -9, I was vastly underevolved and underequipped. At some point I found a terminal and miraculously hacked the main exit location. I headed that way, clearing a couple patrols until it was just me and Mr. Bitey, my only friend. Getting close to the exit, and close to dead, I skirted past one last patrol, leaving Mr. Bitey as a temporary distraction.

14 core left. 5 tiles from the exit.

THUUUUMM.....THUUUUUUM

A beast was guarding the exit.

A beast in view, Mr. Bitey dead, and an assault force behind, I dove for the exit....

And made it to factory  ;D That was quite the adrenaline rush. I evolved for propulsion and guns mostly). Factory 6 wasn't too shabby, I picked up some great cannons and I think I was on a good set of treads. Factory 5, on the other hand, was a different story. I may have had good guns, but I had a lot of trouble with hunters. In the end, I had mostly hunter parts scavenged by the multitude of hunters I killed. In the end, I couldn't get a break, wasn't paying attention to my core, and met my grisly end.

Lots of fun, just gotta pay more attention to my core!

While Kyz had an epic run (good job!!), I perished quicker than I have in quite a while, in -9 Storage  ::)

For this run, I decided to go oldschool and play in ascii and keyboard mode. I think with some practice it could be really efficient, but it'll take a few runs before I'm truly comfortable.

Mats went fine, and even Storage when fine, I felt pretty unstoppable blasting through defenders left and right. At some point I picked up a Precision Rocket Launcher that was DOPE (I don't think I'm 'hip' enough to use that word). Anyway, in Storage, I found the Mats exit, but decided to do a bit more exploring and found a couple terminals. Hacking the terminals revealed the location of a branch...

This was an excellent run for me...all the way until the end ;(

My build was pretty typical for me, legs with a few guns, making sure I had sensors, as opposed to my previous combat run. I made it a point to enter the lower caves, looking for Z, but was pleasantly surprised to find DM! I'd never been to that branch before and it was really cool! From there I actually escaped the P. Caves (very unlike me) and got to factory. I was planning on going back into the lower caves to try to find Z again, but ended up bumping my way up to the next factory level. I made my way to the upper caves and through into ANOTHER new branch Zh! At this point, I'm ecstatic. I'm searching around trying to learn a little about the area when I ask the question "Can I swap places with that robot?"

I don't know why I needed to know, but I did. I'd also completely forgotten that I had a mace equipped....

I straight up murdered one of Zh's guards. They turned on me. Fireworks ensued. I escaped to the P. Caves weeping at the lost opportunity and I died quickly thereafter.

Inspired by zxc's recent (heh, I'm always so far behind) combat victory, I figured I'd try one for myself. Let me just say it was a ton of fun! I'm usually really concerned with getting some sensors going that it was weird seeing a sensor array and saying 'nah, I'm good'. I was making out like a bandit, kickin' ass and taking names all the way up to -5/Factory. (Unfortunately, I'd missed all the cave branches...I guess those signal interpreters are good for something :P)

At this level, I had something like 9 backup treads, 3 engines, and a bunch of cool guns when WHOOSH!! right down a chute trap. I freaked out, made some bad decisions (looking around for some friends that I sometimes see down there) and ended up getting trapped in a corner by 4 Crushers. I equipped my Katana to try to escape through the wall, but they broke it. I patiently passed my turns, naked and afraid, until I was crushed to death.

20
This was my first run in Beta 3, and I had a ton of fun with it. My last few weekly seeds (I don't even think I posted about them) have been super short and disappointing, as I keep getting killed in the prox. caves post zion due to low core. This run, I promised myself, was going to be different! I decided to stick to the survival tips from the manual, legged propulsion with two propulsion slots as my first upgrade and things were going swimmingly. I made it to storage :D and got through without any issues at all. While there, I decided to switch to flight. It's been a long time since I've tried a serious flight build, but they were good units (with extras :D).

Things were going great! (mostly) I'm pretty inexperienced with flight units, so immediately after getting them I decided to evolve an extra propulsion and power slot to handle flying without going negative on energy usage. That backfired :(. I had 2 power, 5 propulsion, 2 utility, and 2 weapon slots, so I didn't even have the utility slots to help out. I ended up only using 4 of my propulsion slots for flight units, and put a beefy treads in the last one to soak up damage (which it did nicely). Experienced flight players: how do you manage the energy to support ratio?

Even after that hullaballoo, I managed pretty well. (Cue dramatic and foreboding music).

At -4/Factory, I decided I needed a parts upgrade. I hadn't picked up much on previous floors and was feeling a bit outclassed.  Thus, I tried really hard to keep from being spotted. Alas, inexperience and carelessness reigned supreme and a watcher saw me and called for help. I ran for it, right into a group of enemies. In the ruckus, I spotted a chute trap and my ridiculous brain thought, "I'll just drop through the chute trap and out run the crushers to get a fresh start at this level nbd." I leapt for the trap, taking heavy fire as more enemies swarmed in. 2 tiles to go. 1 tile to go. I got it! And nothing happened.

Standing on a non-activated chute trap (with my flight units ;)) I panicked, I waited, I turned of my flight units. In the meantime, my power sources were destroyed. Finally, I moved off the tile and back on to trigger the trap, but the damage was done. I had no power, and there were crushers waiting for me. I managed to outrun most of them (somehow) and find the exit, but now I was back on -4/Factory in even worse shape than the first time.

My trusty melee weapons helped me scrounge up enough parts to get a decent tread build going, but I kept getting ambushed in places where the enemies could swarm. That or I equipped my BIG GUNS (aka cannons) and gave my enemies more ways to swarm me. I put up a good fight, but it wasn't enough.

So, I did this a little backwards and ended up doing WS94 AFTER WS95. Honestly, this run ended the same as that one...I went in the caves and got to Zion with almost no core, then got shredded after that. Maybe I'll learn something this time ;)

Also, I went through storage twice!! At one point I clicked SHUTDOWN instead of HIBERNATE, but managed to grab an old autosave so I could continue without losing too much progress.

Woo! Back to Weekly Seeds! Things have been crazy at home, so this is the first time I've gotten to play in a while.

I made it through mats pretty quickly, and ended up picking up a couple flight units. I headed into the lower caves (maybe not a good idea), but things went well until I hit the second lower caves...from the start I felt like I was running for my life. I managed to slip into Zion with something like 145 core and no resources. No worries, I'll stock up in Zion. Nope, Zion held no propulsion or power for me to use, so I was force to journey into the proximity caves virtually naked, albeit with some backup :). Even then, I ran into a few too many goons and opened a really big door to my demise :D.

Happy Hacking!

Well, after last week's complete destruction at the hands of
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I was excited to give it another go.

Things started off swell! So swell, in fact, that I decided to take the path through the mines. Boom, as soon as I entered -10/Mines, I get notified of a demolisher squad (? I think this is what they're called, but please correct me if not) dispatched to combat a derelict invasion. I knew what it meant: fast derelicts with flamers vs unaware grenadiers. Get me out now. Unfortunately (or fortunately) a Layout(Zone) showed me an exit...just on the other side of a wall, and the only way out was through the battle. I helplessly pounded the wall with light cannon fire, but to no avail. Reluctantly, I moved towards the fighting and found some very useful loot: a bore cannon! Tier 5 cannon on -10! Overjoyed, I went back to my wall, tore a hole in it with the bore cannon, and escaped to -9\materials. Mats and the subsequent mines were uneventful until a derelict emerged from the shadows offering refuge! The stairs led straight to Zion (-7)! Overjoyed, I got some gear, got imprinted, got some friends, and made my way to the proximity caves. Proxy caves were a breeze as my brothers and I waltzed into Factory.

Here...our story turns. Overjoyed at having friends (and lots of factory intel), I quickly gained more followers. But with greater power, comes greater responsibility; a responsibility I shirked as I flew through factory. Eventually, I came to a room with a Beast. "We can take it!" Little did I notice my escort had shrunk significantly. Additionally, a trap was sprung and another round of crazy derelicts came through followed closely by a new demolisher squad! We were soon overrun. I dumped my gear and flew for the nearest exit. I made it to the caves with 32 core left, and I was soon finished off :(

Let this be a lesson, when you have an entourage, play slower, not faster. There are tons of additional factors to take into account besides "my guys are invincible, we can win anything."

Ooh, switching to ASCII mode :D. It's even more thematic and I certainly enjoy it myself, though when showing the game to others I tend to use tiles, or at least switch back and forth between the two, since the average person can get a somewhat better idea of what's going on that way :P

Agreed, it definitely has a different feel to it. I'll play with it some more before choosing a favorite, but I imagine switching back and forth to be common occurrence in my future :D

To me, ASCII mode felt bolder, but I don't know if it was from the symbols, colors, or both. Probably both lol  8)
