Good at Cogmind, eh? Just wait until Alpha 4. They have garrisons. And they aren't afraid to use them ;D

Will this mean limited troops on each map?

Honestly, when I learned you had been developing x@com, I was sooo amazed, haha.
I can't wait to see though, what your experiences with Cogmind does to x@com. : )

Master volume and time are currently in there now.
Mountable drives are a good idea and should be pretty easy to add.
Also I'm going to add the mediaplayer I use for music, song name, current time, song time, audio player volume, etc

Thanks for the ideas though. Got the whole weekend to work on this too, although those features are pretty quick and simple, done them enough times :P

Heya everyone. I'm mostly lurking around, just watching as the game develops.
So a little about me. I'm a roguelike ASCII enthusiast. I'm also into programming, maths and linux. I love linux. I'm currently nearing the end of my first year of Uni, where we have started using Java. I spend a lot of time writing, and programming basic things, keeping me just above my class mates in programming. Although I still feel l suck at it, I can at least get basic procedural generation working. Barely, xD

I probably spend more time writing and listening to music then anything though. Mostly whilst I wait for my girlfriend to come online (Cause somehow I got myself into an long distance relationship situation which is the hardest thing I've ever done/continued as it doesn't really give me anything I'm looking for in a relationship, but.. curse loyalty :P I'm stuck with it.

-How did you learn about Cogmind?

I don't even know. All I know is this has been jumping out at me over various place on the net. To be honest. I just thought this would be another weird incomplete, spin off roguelike (what with the mech customization and all) so I never really bothered to look into it. Until recently, of course. The developer's amazing responses and interaction with the community, his interesting way of approaching the game really caught my interest so here I am, just sort following progress, dev's and reading the lots of material Kyzrati has strew across the forum, and his dev logs.

-What other roguelikes do you enjoy?
Any. That is, any that is feature rich, complete and full of lots of randomization or procedural content. Nethack, Angband, DCSS I used to play a lot. But yeah, even they don't feel like they have the diversity I'm looking for, somehow. DCSS kind of does. So, I'm going to start developing my own roguelike. The hard thing is, Uni keeps changing languages, so after getting a procedural generated dungeon in python set up, we then moved to basic java and I'm now trying to get a similar gen written in java. Although, what we actually do in Uni is not even close to the work I put into these dungeon gen projects. The other thing is, I can't bring myself to progress until the world gen looks nice, and I honestly suck at that.

-What are your other favorite games?
XCOM UFO DEFENSE and Xenonauts
Halo 1 and 2 (Yep, still play them often enough and love them)
Dwarf Fortress + Any roguelike really.
FTL, Spelunky, Binding of Isacc, Dungeon of the Endless (All those games people call Rogue likes which also annoys me to no end)

-What do you do for fun when you're not playing games?
I write Stories, Novels and Poetry.
I listen to music. I mean, I literally lay there or sit still for hours, listening to music. Synthwave on soundcloud, or 80's romance songs, or even a lot of classic Guns N Roses, Ozzy Osbourne and, litterally, too much else to all list here.
I program basic projects to build up my skills.
I rarely play games these days, honestly. Sometimes I'll do nothing for hours, with or without music when I could be playing games, but I don't, xD I just do nothing and think.

Hm, not a lot of progress.. I'm horrible at design, so I truly have no idea what to put on there. xD
I was thinking of syncing, I dunno RSS feeds and the like, the email notification, anything else internet related.
I'll even try and do the similar green box around  these things that Cogmind has in it's information panels, because they look soo clean and nice.

A friend came up with the idea of downloading a larger wallpaper, and cropping out a section that didn't have the Cogmind logo. I don't know why I never think of these things myself, seriously.

On the right is Dwarf Fortress running so that I could watch one of the CPU bars just explode with activity.
And battery bar is empty because I actually take out my laptop battery completely when using it at home.

Anyone got any suggestions of cool things to add? I need ideas, cause I just downright suck at design in general. It's literally the one thing that ruins all of my projects.

Just spent the past 5 hours straight preparing for tonight's Programming test. Which is in about.. an hour or 2. Moment I get home, if I don't drop dead on my bed, I'll probably do some heavy work on getting some real information onto this desktop. :P Email notifications and the like..

Didn't have much time to work on this, but I can't wait to get back to it. : D

So, there is a lot of amazing wallpapers on the Media page for Cogmind.
I decided to think about changing my Desktop/Conky mix and use one of those. Not necessarily because it's Cogmind, but because those wallpapers are so amazing.

This is currently what I've done in the past half hour, while waiting for my next class to start.

I think it's time I learn how to do those circular bars with the lua scripts. I think they'd look a lot nicer with this.

I think Roguelikes are the games I play most.
Plus the occasional runs in the other "Roguelikes" like FTL, Spelunky, Issac (Still annoys me when people call em Roguelikes)

But switching between DF, Nethack, Angband, DCSS, CataDDA (Mostly those games) I personally it find quite easy.
You play em for a good while, and really, if I havn't played it in a good couple of weeks, the '?' key basically works in every game for a list of controls.
Once glance at that and I dunno, it all comes back to me. Mostly, the only thing I need to remember with them all is the Look command.

I can't even remember what it is for Angband right now.
Nethack I think is 'v'
DCSS I can't remember (Been a good while since I played that)
DF is 'l' or 'k' and then in adventure mode I'm sure it's the other key.
CataDDA is 'x' which is pretty much what I always press instinctively at first.
And then Cogmind, I think was 'x' but I'm not sure, don't get to play it much yet.

It's that particular command though which annoys me, xD Cause it's different in every roguelike. Heck it might have even been something totally new for Caves of Qud. Can't remember that one either.

Actually, reading around a bit. I'm becoming to understand that I might be spending far too much time on the first and second level floors, which could be where my problem is.

Think I need to learn a bit more on the different weapons and the things their stats really affect in combat and find out how to increase accuracy a bit too. I get about %50 on every single shot, xD Which I'm sure is a fault on my half.

And again, thanks for this. : )
Will see how I go next time I can give it a good try, hehe.

First off all, I would like to say, Thank you for this amazing game. I've been spending a considerable amount of time playing it on a mates computer as I don't have the funds or means to purchase this at the moment. But still, it's probably gonna be the first thing I do when I can. This game is truly amazing.

Among all the roguelikes I've played, from Nethack, Angband, to Stone Soup as well as CataDDA and even Dwarf Fortress, I must say this is by far already among my favourites. You've truly got a perfect interface for the game that not only looks nice and suits the theme, but is damn fluent and just, perfect.

Although, there are some things I would like to bring up about how I feel about the game. I understand, of course, that you've already got a direction to push the game in and have made many decisions for probably, very good reasons. I'd still like to just bring these up anyway. No harm in that.

The first major thing I want to point out about what I dislike so far is the whole customization aspect. I love it, and that is what drew my interests. What I don't love, is how I've quickly become to realize that the game so doesn't allow that style of freedom with it if you really want to accomplish something.
Maybe I'm just bad at the game :P (I'm getting better, hehe) but with every fight that breaks out. I find myself losing pretty much all my guns and utilities.
And yeah, I'm using doors and things to my advantage. But all my shots seem to miss or when they hit, they seem to do nothing to the enemy. (Probably hitting some useless part or something)

I understand this is supposed to happen. You've got to find replacements and make use of whatever resources you have. The problem is, there is such a little sense of accomplishment and development when you find a new awesome part. You lose it pretty soon after. And I feel like the game loses it's, erm customization aspect. Or maybe the game isn't focused on customization, but I kinda had the idea it was.

The way to avoid the whole losing your shiny new parts so quickly, is to avoid combat. This brings me to what I personally feel is the biggest flaw right now. Apart from the few people who've had their successful full combat runs with incredible difficulty and luck. Stealth and speed is really the only good way to go. Whilst I think that combination works well, I also find it a little off putting.

The game has all these other directions. You have wheels, tracks and legs too. Not just flight units. You have all these beautiful guns laying about. Explosives, you can hack and assimilate the civilian mechs. You can armour yourself up, or even go with moderate speed, armour and weapons if you like.

But it seems that flight units, sensor arrays and interpreters are the only way to go to have a chance. Sure, you can't hold as much mass with them, but what does that matter? Having more support and a much slower speed just doesn't really give you any chance of survival anyway compared to flying at high speed and avoiding enemies.

I just feel like there needs to be some more of a weakness to that tactic maybe. It's not that it's unbeatable or anything, but I feel like it is superior in almost every situation. I also would love to see updates focusing on making other strategies more viable. Giving the player more ways to play the game how they like.

I honestly think that weapons and parts in storage should be in far less abundance and should be a bit harder to destroy. Therefore there's more to maintaining newly equipped items. More sense of, gaining something when you find a new part that's better then your outdated stuff. Repair Units would be a little more useful. Make salvaged gear from enemies more damaged. You know, instead of finding a rocket launcher that's just disposable for one or 2 battles, then replacing it with your looted light assault rifles again.

Also, on the note with Repair Units and other facilities and Terminals. Here is a suggestion I might consider to moving to the suggestions section tomorrow. When you're fully detected, you're locked out. Cool! And they know your position too, so get moving. I think, these also need to have a limit of how many attempts before they lock out (without alerting everyone). Doesn't matter if you're succeeding or failing. Just so you can't keep attempting to download schematics from the same terminal for 500 or so turns by waiting 50 ish turns after the detection gets high.

About the battle build mechs. I know. Your trying to escape. Blowing up every enemy in the map will get you killed because more and more reinforcements. But, you have all these awesome guns lying around in storage. And they are mostly useless anyway. But if a player wants to play as huge thundering tank, they should be able to with some kind of chance. Just something I'm personally hoping you'll keep in mind during future updates.

Same thing with hacking. More modules to help with hacking (Although I'll admit I haven't gotten too far to find out if anything actually will make you a pretty decent hacker) but I'd love to see a purely hacking based mech be viable too. Also, maybe make it so Overloading another mech actually makes them race forwards in one direction for a bit before exploding? Getting the attention of nearby forces so you can sneak past while they investigate?

I think I've gone on for quite a bit. It's 2 am and this took almost an hour to write up, now I've lost all train of thought. Once again, thanks so much for building an amazing game though. And I can't wait to purchase this. Can't wait to explore a bit more of what the game as to offer too.
