I finally got a chance to stream again! I ran this seed this morning (https://go.twitch.tv/videos/186435692), and it went... much worse than usual!

As always I played combat and just took whatever stairs I found, ending up going through the lower caves which only gave me DM... and on the way back got a real nasty proxy caves (surprise :P). Ended far sooner than usual: -6.

Overconfidence was a big part of my downfall, though--I was in great shape but had to fight off a ton of squads not far from the entrance, all shielded by a Protector which I just left there... I got them down to the very last damaged grunt (and that Protector :/) before it finished me off.

That didn't have to be such a deadly encounter. Oops.

(Not bringing a launcher into the caves was the first serious strategic miscalculation!)

Spoiler: Score: 4,025 (click to show/hide)

Anyway, since it ended there I continued the stream with another run from scratch (though not the seed) which made it to -3. There were some obvious reasons the second run didn't reach the end, among them that I was racing through the world pretty quickly and didn't get any mid-game benefits (no branches except Storage, which was fun at least), and that I allowed myself to get bogged down in the open in Research too early.

Wasn't too bad, though, shooting up the place for 16k points :D

Ran the seed today and had a decent run! Explored some areas

I've never been before and got myself blown up something fierce mostly because of being slow as heck on treads!

Score 12625

Yeah looks like you sure went deep into that branch! There's a lot of stuff out there, but it can be pretty dangerous :)

Well here's the thing, I wasn't sure what to do for my next run, there is still some things on my list that I wanna explore, but I couldn't really make up my mind what to go for. So I came by this weekly seed and since I've recently gotten what seems to be a pretty good score, I thought to myself, come on, lets show'em! So are you ready, are you ready for my score? Might wanna sit down first, or stand up for whatever I know, either way it is going to blow you away (but not the way you expected):

Yea it happened, Infestation in the mines, right around the corner of the entry point, in hindsight I wished I didn't kill those swarmers before the Infestation, that might have saved me, either way, very interesting run, though quite short. I'm hereby applying for last place and will not bother posting the whole scoresheet, since so much happened it this run that generating a scoresheet must be considered a waste of data bits :D

Ahaha yeah can't enter the Mines without the right gear or some tricky tactics (the infestation is usually survivable with some cunning, unless they spawn in right in your face in which case you'd better have a launcher :P).

Inspired by zxc's recent (heh, I'm always so far behind) combat victory, I figured I'd try one for myself. Let me just say it was a ton of fun! I'm usually really concerned with getting some sensors going that it was weird seeing a sensor array and saying 'nah, I'm good'. I was making out like a bandit, kickin' ass and taking names all the way up to -5/Factory. (Unfortunately, I'd missed all the cave branches...I guess those signal interpreters are good for something :P)

At this level, I had something like 9 backup treads, 3 engines, and a bunch of cool guns when WHOOSH!! right down a chute trap. I freaked out, made some bad decisions (looking around for some friends that I sometimes see down there) and ended up getting trapped in a corner by 4 Crushers. I equipped my Katana to try to escape through the wall, but they broke it. I patiently passed my turns, naked and afraid, until I was crushed to death.

How do you veterans like to handle Waste?

As always, this run will be posted to my Youtube Channel in the next couple weeks. Stop on by for new Cogmind vids M, W, F!

Noooo, looks like you had a good run going, too :P

I am not a Waste Expert, but the general idea is that if on treads you should hopefully already have the firepower to take them out, and on any other form of propulsion you can outmaneuver them.

If it looks like things are definitely not going to go your way you still have the option to drop stuff and outmaneuver them, so technically death is always avoidable down there. You just need to maneuver carefully so they don't block the entire path forward (and if careful enough there will also always be a space between you and them so they can't attack as you pass, either).

(Also 9 spare treads is too much! Treads last longer than all other propulsion so you don't need to carry so many extras.)

The crushers are super resistant to EM so that's not the way to go.    Massed thermal cannon volleys with enough heat dissipation is how I survive waste.  Kinetic cannons or really good launchers can work too, but you'll usually need a matter pod in the inventory to have enough matter to get through.

Worst case scenario, get naked, flee, and try to mount a come back next level.

I have been experimenting with wastes recently trying to farm that damper plating. The most success that I have had was with stacking high crit weapons (basically weapons with hyp. tag). They are not crit-immune and most of their coverage is attributed to the damper plating and their weapons (roughly 20%, I think). So, if you stack like 3 hyp. gauss and keep spamming, you are bound to get some good crits in which will either straight up kill them or atleast destroy their weapon.

Double launchers also work but they destroy all salvage. One thing I am yet to try is to see whether I can disrupt the damper and see whether the compactors are vulnerable to the regular EMP flush.
