Title: Steam Achievement Ideas
Post by: Amphouse on February 14, 2017, 09:59:35 PM
So since Cogmind is finally coming to steam in light of the recent steam greenlight campaign(assuming it gets enough votes...go vote!), I've decided that now is the best time to start brainstorming what kind of achievements we want. I like steam achievements but I prefer ones that either celebrate milestones or reward unusual/difficult behavior. Personally I dislike achievements like "kill 100 grunts". That said, here are a few of my own ideas; please feel free to criticize them or contribute your own!

Preemptive Strike: Kill an ARC before it releases its payload. [picture: the ARC tile with a skull superimposed]

Reduce, Reuse...: Enter Recycling. [picture: that recycling symbol]  (at this point I got lazy and stopped thinking about pictures, I'll add to this later)

Target Acquired: Get scanned by a researcher.

LOCKED ON: Have more than a 40% targeting boost for ranged weapons.

The more the merrier/We are Legion: Have more than 5 allies at once.

l33t h4x0r: Have a hacking bonus of 50 or greater.

Ghost: Exit a main level(not a branch, and not -11) without being seen(by hostiles?).

Sniper: Kill a hostile from more than 20 tiles away.

A New Friend: Rewire a robot.

Backstab: Kill a purple NPC.

Is it hot in here or is it just me!?: Cause a robot to meltdown.

Power Corrupts: Terminally corrupt a robot.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?: Reboot a hostile robot.

Error 47: Overload a hostile robot.

Assimilation Complete: Assimilate a hostile robot.

Wanna blow somethin' up?: Destroy 5 or more hostiles in a single explosion.

That was an Accident I Swear: Destroy 10 or more machines in a single turn.(chain reaction explosion, non interactive + interactive)

Line 'Em Up: Pierce through 3 or more robots with a single shot.

Unlimited Power: Have more than X power generation at once.

Speed Demon: Travel at Fastx3 (I forget what number this shows at, the purple indicator)

More Dakka: Fire a volley with 5(6?) or more guns in it.

Public Static Void Main(): Kill main.c

Batter Up: Knock a hostile robot into an exploding reactor.

Help in High Places: Use the O8 code. /or/ Use a Zion hack.

Release the Drones!: Have 6 or more drones at once.

Alien Tech: Equip an Alien Artifact.

Made in Tau Ceti IV: Enter Factory.

Market Research: Enter Research.

Denied?: Enter Access.

Silicon Rush: Exit Mines.

Lost and Found: Exit Storage.

Spelunker: Enter Lower Caves.

Oracle: Exit Data Miner.

Local Village: Exit Zion.

Not Just a Cord: Exit Extension.

Personal Space: Exit Proximity Caves.

Never Dig Up: Enter Upper Caves.

A Powerful Ally...?: Exit Warlord.

...and more achievements for the other areas, I just can't think of good names currently. Notice that areas with multiple floors have "enter" achievements, otherwise I did "exit" ones(except for access and recycling). Do be careful to not make achievements that spoil things. Note that some achievements on steam can be made "secret", we will want to do that for a few of ours. Also, everything that has a named entry in the "bonus" section of the scoresheet should probably be an achievement, and we will need achievements for beating the game and for special endings...whatever those end up being. If I think of more I'll edit this post.

Yeah I was going to make this thread eventually as a repository for everyone's achievement ideas, so feel free to drop stuff in here as we're doing with the Challenge Modes thread! (And of course there will be at least some crossover, as winning or reaching certain depts with challenges active could be their own achievements. Though achievements is definitely a broader category based on what we already have in the game!)

Note that Achievements will not be Steam-only. All versions of Cogmind, DRM-free and offline as well, will record your Achievements and progress, so this is a feature that will be open to everyone.

I love it! Some of the things we were also thinking about over at the Discord:

Escape! : Beat the game :P

Equip the storm laser

Weapon proficiency (number of times your favorite weapon was XYZ type)

Go stair-to-stair naked

I also recommend that some of the more spoilery achievements (Zion, Warlord) remain descriptionless, it adds to the mystery of the achievement...

You've got to remember to give them names,
Go stair-to-stair naked
like Streaker :)

Another note: Remember that we did a tournament in 2015 which included a bunch of achievements (http://www.gridsagegames.com/cogmind/events/AC2015/index.html) (with total achievements by each player tallied on the results page (http://www.gridsagegames.com/cogmind/events/AC2015/results.html)).

Have +100% to hack success.
Lose 300 parts in a single run.
Block an alarm trap transmission.
Evade a tracking programmer (with or without ECM).
Get out of a stasis trap with the help of an explosion.
Meet your maker.
Get hit by friendly fire.
Have 1500 or more heat.
Reach factory without losing a single part.
Shoot down a missile with a defensive utility.
Have 1% or less core exposure.
Get trapped with a cave-in.
Meet your demise in the wastes.
Win under 2000 turns.
Destroy a patrol with reprogrammed (or placed) traps.
Intentionally trigger a chute trap.
Seal/jam/destroy all garrisons in Access.
Sneak attack a Watcher and destroy it in one hit.
Destroy a hunter through a wall.
Destroy 120 grunts in a single run.
Discover the use of self-destruct interrupters.
Enter a garrison with under 100 core integrity and survive it.
Reach the surface with fewer than 10 parts destroyed.
Find the møøse.
Reach alert level 5.
Have an inventory size of 20 or greater with flight propulsion and without being overweight.
Have 8 wheels equipped at the same time.

Names can be thought of when achievements are selected. No point thinking up names for achieves that won't make it in. :P
Title: Re: Steam Achievement Ideas

But I thought coming up with names was easily half the fun! :D

Sneak attack a Watcher and destroy it in one hit. - Watch This!
Lose 300 parts in a single run. - To Scrap and Back
Get hit by friendly fire. - Watch where You're Pointing that Thing!
Get out of a stasis trap with the help of an explosion. - I'm freeeee... Ow
Get trapped with a cave-in. - Claustrophobic
Meet your demise in the wastes. - Wasted
Meet your maker. - ...this one sounds like the achievement name itself ;)
Reach alert level 5. - And Then I Almost Died
Have 1500 or more heat. - Is it Just Me?
Intentionally trigger a chute trap. - Wheee!
Have +100% to hack success. - I am zxckat
Have 8 wheels equipped at the same time. - Disciple of Amphouse
Have an inventory size of 20 or greater with flight propulsion and without being overweight. - okay now zxc just sounds like he's describing all the crazy things he does :P

Okay, not a lot of great (or serious) names, but I have to get back to work!

Firstly, hello and congrats on launching on Greenlight. I was very interested to see a thread on Steam achievements and I'm extremely excited to see Cogmind approaching a full release this year :)

i did get concerned though when i read some of the achievements from the tournament in 2015. I don't feel that many of these would make good Steam achievements as there is a competitive side to them which requires the player to top a leader board. In my opinion it should be possible for all good players with skill, and the inclination to put in the effort, to earn all the achievements, not just the players at the top of leader boards.

Steam does also offer Leaderboard functionality as well, and that would be a good fit for the type of achievements that you had in the tournament.

Thank you for a great game, and the inspirational game dev posts too, Kyzrati!

Hey Mad Dog Torx :)

Yeah I was just pointing to that as a list of something that existed before, not achievements that would necessarily be used. Basically Cogmind already records a ton of stats from a run, so it's easy to come up with new ones like people have been mentioning in this thread. The tournament was certainly competitive, and therefore of a different nature than a true player-based achievement system (so don't worry about that!), but it does give a jumping off point for more ideas, and remind people some of what's possible.

Browsing any of the more recent score sheets (http://www.gridsagegames.com/cogmind/scores/) is of course an even better way to approach that!

Necroing this thread, because it's relevant now.

A few of mine:

(I'm far from getting all lore and all gallery, but from what people are saying on discord these names should be appropriate)

This is interesting Acquire 25% lore collection.
I think I know what's going on Acquire 50% lore collection.
I was wrong! Acquire 75% lore collection.
I wish there was more Acquire 100% lore collection.
Catch 'em all Acquire 100% gallery colleciton.

(There probably should be an achievement for winning on any difficulty level, but there probably should be one for winning at normal level too! But I'm not a fan of splitting more achievements for different difficulty levels.)

That wasn't easy at all! Win on easiest or higher difficulty.
Harder than expected Win on easy or higher difficulty.
Survived the Complex Win on normal difficulty.

(Some achievements can encourage players to try different playstyles/builds/items... and maybe learn about some mechanics like corrupting enemies, which you might not realize without reading the long manual)

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream Jam 10 distress signals in one playthrough.
418: I'm a teapot Use EM weapons to terminally corrupt 10 hostiles in one run. (required more than 1 to make players see how it works -- I believe 1 kill can be made accidentaly and therefore such players may miss completely on the idea of bypassing armor via corruption)
Hot girl! Melt 10 components off hostiles in one run. (melting is currently way harder than corrupting, so 10 kills would be too much)

(other)

The most popular achievement Get terminated. (pointing out that it is the most popular achievement might make players not feel so bad about dieing)
404: Not found Get at least 20% system corruption.
Redshirts Terminate 10000 grunts across any number of playthroughs. (I guess this one is going to be long done by the time you get 100% lore collection anyway)

Quote
That was an Accident I Swear: Destroy 10 or more machines in a single turn.(chain reaction explosion, non interactive + interactive)
I love this one. I think everyone had this moment when they accidentaly blew up  an array of reactors and were like "Oh sh*t! The Complex is going to be pissed!". And then steam would show "That was an Accident I Swear" in the corner... :D

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap: Kill an enemy with a trap you hacked or planted
Lack of Comprehension: Lose 50% of item knowledge from corruption data loss
Deconstruction: Kill an enemy with a damage type other than melee, kinetic, thermal, EM, or explosive
Godslayer: Destroy Warlord's favorite toy
Kill 'em All: Activate the exoskeleton
Ride the Lightning: Kill an enemy with an overloaded fabricator
Maximum Potential: Kill two or more enemies with a single shot from a thermal weapon
Appetite for Destruction: fire a launcher at an enemy at point blank range
Wolverine Blues: Have at least 6 slots outfitted with regenerative armor
Left Hand Path: Enter Cetus without any allies
Maximum Killing Capacity: Inflict 250 damage against an enemy with a single weapon
Let Me See You Stripped: Instakill an enemy with the CS

Only imperial storm troopers are so precise - fire 5 volleys at an enemy (and miss all of them)

Use the force, Luke - equip a tractor beam

Boring conversation anyway - get locked out of a terminal

I am the god of hellfire - melt an enemy

Twilight of the Gods - destroy a behemoth (or other powerful enemy) with the ragnarok missile launcher

Do androids dream of electric sheep? - fabricate a non-combat robot

Explosive stupidity - die from self inflicted explosive damage

I AM THE COGMIND! - die on level -10 with less than 500 points

Woof! Hack a Behemoth.

Light Traveler: Beat the game without ever equipping Storage Units. (Maybe this is too hard and you should get it for getting to -5 without any.)

Hyperlight Traveler: use a TR.

Rincewind: use 10 TRs in a run.

Takes Candy From Strangers: follow a Derelict into the shadows.

Leap Before You Look: Go into 10 unidentified exits in a run.

Adventurous: use at least 5 unidentified artifacts in a run.

Gun/Cannon/Melee/Explosive Specialist: more than 80-90% of damage done with the respective weapon type, with a certain minimum of enemies destroyed to rule out stealth runs.

True Rogue: more than 80% of damage done with traps.

Wizard Needs Food Badly: die to an intercept dispatch. Or maybe escape from one?

Analyst: download at least 10 enemy analyses in a single run.

Armchair Analyst: download at least 10 enemy analyses in a stealth run.

Librarian: download at least 25 lore records in a single run, or get more than 50% lore completion.

Monster: some of the endings and CRM events would seem to qualify, also betraying allies

True Cogmind: win 25 times.

False Cogmind: betray

Null Cogmind or Null Pointer Exception: die from corruption

Flat Cogmind: die from you know what

Haha, nice necro. I was expecting this thread to come back eventually :)

And then steam would show "That was an Accident I Swear" in the corner... :D
Regarding this, note that I don't really know how Steam or achievements work but I'm pretty sure that'd require the Steam Overlay, which is not compatible with Cogmind. Of course, I plan to implement achievements that work even without Steam, just saying I imagine there wouldn't be a popup on Steam's end and I'll have to do it my own way in game.

In any case, will be investigating all this before too long.

Excellent thread necro.

Great ideas all around.

You can do your own ingame achievements (like FTL) and have them pop up, and synchronise with Steam.

Incorruptible: Reach the surface without taking any system corruption in that playthrough.
(also a gentle hint that outpacing Programmers is possible)

Area 51: Enter every unique area across any number of playthroughs.
(encourages trying to see every branch + Wastes + a Garrison, even if Cogmind dies in the process, without having to list names)

Hm, this one is probably just too easy for flight players and overlaps with other achievements like speed running? I'd have to see someone do it first and hear what they think. Almost every achievement I've added to the final list so far is something that at least someone has proven can be done before, or at least based on player abilities I know is something that's both possible and could be a fun challenge.

I'm curious about this one, though, since it might be fun. Would need some feedback on it.

I'm not doing almost any "across multiple/any number of playthrough" achievements, except for basically lore/gallery collection and win count. Your suggestion here is included via other achievements, though.

It's not particularly easy for players who are doing the optimal win-rate plan of not transitioning from combat to flight stealth until Factory in the hopes of learning the basics of both styles and/or getting their first win.  Unless you get very lucky with early transition gear Programmers are likely to get you at least once while you're still running combat (from a new / middling player perspective, at least), and even if you get a flight build into Research they're liable to find you while you backtrack through the hellish maze. :P

I'm sure the very best stealth players and speedrunners (like zxc) can do it if asked, but I actually was inspired to think of it by my terminal-easter-egg-hunting run where I made the flight transition very suboptimally early for my skill level (on -9!) in the name of optimizing for terminal-finding instead of winning - and to my astonishment, had my very first corruption-free trip through Factory despite many scrapes in late Materials and early Factory and two detours to the Wastes!  I feel like continuing that through Research and Access will require much more skill and map sense, but then I felt like terminal-hunting would result in many ignominious deaths and instead it put me on -3 with a flying stealth turtle, so we'll see... XD

In any case, I like it when some of a game's achievements hint at what is possible in gameplay to encourage people to try different styles, and this one seems like it would do that.  Feel free to get feedback on what people make of it and how difficult it really is. :)

Fair enough.  I wasn't sure quite what style of task you're going for with the achievements, but avoiding multiple-run achievements is a fine system.

Title: Re: Steam Achievement Ideas
Post by: Kyzrati on February 09, 2018, 05:40:18 PM
Absolutely, definitely achievements need to span the range of challenge levels. It's not as interesting to have a bunch of achievements that will likely be simultaneously earned anyway, though (overlap).

I feel it could be interesting, but would rather have actual feedback on the experience first.

In any case, the initial achievement list is done for now. We have 255 and any new ones will have to be added beyond Beta 6. But this thread can continue to serve its purpose as a repository of ideas.

I don't want to do a bunch of renaming of existing achievements except where there's possibly an issue with the current one. Like I've already decided that "Adventurous" will be renamed for Beta 7 because it's too close to "Adventurer," and these two aren't even referring to related achievements. I was thinking about "What Is This Thing?" as well, but no plans yet.

AOE2 is a legendary game though and it would be a sick reference :)

I suggest an achievement for destroying a large number of bots using guns only and without suffering any damage. (the idea is to have an offensive gun stack and to kill a lot of bots from long range)

Hm, don't know that reference.

Maybe would work, would require a lot of special detection.

Hackwars Intercept hostile hacking attempt.

I was wondering about some RIF related achievements. Some of these can teach new players that there are multiple "levels" of robot hacking system: basic, RIF required, RIF + coupler required. But using all these would be an overkill? :P
Join the dark side Install RIF
Mindtrick Use a coupler hack
Basic hack Hack a robot without RIF
Freebies Use a free RIF hack

Versatile Use 10 different robot hacks
Robot hacking tour Hack 10 different robot types

There are already achievements for assimilation hacks. I thought about achievements for each type of hack, but for some hacks there is no easy way to tell which group it belongs to.

Deadly precision Destroy 50 hostiles via critical hits.
Well done, please! or simply Well done (hidden) Reach critical temperature (500 units).
Just one more minute! or Just one more turn! or Just one more level! Have 10 hours of cumulative play time (excludes AFK time).

I thought to put 100h in the latter achievement, but then people might want to AFK to get it out of the way... And completionists will be put off by such an achievement, even though it will be obtained by the time they obtain many other achievements. I feel like people who spent <10h don't aim for specific achievements yet, or at least are very close to 10h mark. Or maybe just make it hidden? But there might be more "one more minute!" feel for players around 10h mark than ~100h mark. It probably needs to be obtained mid-run, not on score summary. Or maybe add one for 10h and then a hidden one for 100h (I have a life! I swear!)? Needs to state that it excludes AFK time, otherwise people will look at steam.

Man, I really like all those achievements. More than I expected. And have suprising fun coming up with more :) Going for 512 now!  ;D
Title: Re: Steam Achievement Ideas
Post by: Kyzrati on January 11, 2019, 05:40:59 AM
Yeah time-wise we can always use the game's own data for that, since it excludes idling so that wouldn't be a way to achieve it, and as you say by the time you get other achievements you'll have earned these. I mean, when it comes to completionists this is really nothing, because getting all of those harder ones takes hundreds of hours anyway!

512 xD. I seriously doubt we're going to actually hit that, at least not unless Cogmind is developed for several more years. I'm sure we could get together another 100 or so by 1.0, but adding a whole new set of 256 is just... crazy. (And then where do we go from there?! :P)

It's funny you mention because after it was brought up twice on Discord, I immediately liked the idea of a loot-box-only run and added to the list of potential challenge modes! So as a challenge mode it would naturally get an achievement associated with it (well, winning like that, anyway :D). It does sound like a fun type of run, and challenging, too, although it'd be unprecedented to add a challenge mode that also requires having another special mode active at the same time. Not that that's too important here--I think we can make an exception for something like this when it comes to challenge modes, which are already outside the "normal" scope of the game :)

We do have relevant melee achievements already, essentially the same as you mention since it takes almost an entire run from start to finish to achieve them (and by the end melee is actually one of the more powerful late-game builds anyway!).

1,000 deaths is... a bit much! Though more importantly, as per the achievement specifications achievements shouldn't require the player to do anything bad for themselves, and requiring deaths would be bad for the players who almost never die :P (there are a small handful of achievements celebrating negative effects, but these were all chosen to be events that eventually occur through natural play anyway)

Matter of Heart - Reactivate "Heart of Steel" using copious amounts of Matter.

(Btw there's a funny bug? that if you run out of matter and continue to turn on HoS while equipped then wait a turn automatically shutting it off, it creates a 'free' turn for your count down but even if you hit 200 turns to activate it it won't activate unless your subsequent turn past 200 has the required matter for a turn to count. I ran it to -100 turns or something crazy after at least 20 minutes or more of reactivating HoS without matter when I first had found it not realizing I had no more matter left to feed it lol iirc it said -10X or something remaining as it clearly wasn't coded to display negative turns. Might of already suggested/reported this, mind is a bit foggy.)

Buddies of Steel - After reactivating HoS, beat the game with him still alive. (HoS must be reactivated on floors -6 or below for achievement to be eligible)

Blood Brothers - Get 100-200 combined kills with HoS as your ally. (probably 100 kills, 200 seems a bit hard to me at least)

I'd do it again - Kill 1,000 enemies (over many runs, counts every type)

I can kill time too - Kill 10,000 enemies

I did kill time - Play Cogmind for 1,000 hours

Most Deadly Player (MDP) - Kill 1,000,000 enemies (hopefully it takes years of dedication ;D could also be MDP - Most Dedicated Player)

Happy 1 Year Later - Log in to Cogmind and play 1 year after your first time playing.

This game never got old - Log into Cogmind and play 5 years after playing it for the first time.

Bug Zapper - Kill 50 Swarmer bots during a single run using only single shot, single volley lasers. (Nothing that has spread or multiple rounds per shot should count)

Bug catcher - Kill 50 Swarmer bots during a single run using only melee weapons.

Mosquito Repellent - Kill 25 swarmer bots only using a flamer.

Bee Keeping - Kill 25 Swarmer bots during a single run using only traps.

Blade Runner - Have a speed of 2X (Fast) or faster, 4 bladed weapons and an imp. melee analysis suite or better equipped all at once for 3 consecutive floors.

Sniper - Kill 50 enemies from a distance of 8 or above without using launchers or cannons.

Pro Trapper - Kill 25 enemies using traps during a single run.

Seasoned Trapper - Kill 100 enemies using traps. (over many runs)

Experienced Trapper - Kill 500 enemies using traps. "  "

Master Trapper - Kill 1,500 enemies using traps. "  "

Bounty Hunter - Kill 25 Hunter bots during a single run.

Can't Hunt this! - Kill 1,000 Hunter bots (over the course of many runs)

Hunt this! - Rewire, fab or reprogram a Hunter bot and have it kill another Hunter bot. 10 times. (over the course of many runs)

Heavier they are, quieter they die - Kill a Heavy before it calls for reinforcements on you.

Heavy Suspicion - Have reinforcements sent after you for doing something suspicious near a heavy.

Heavy Peeping - Get reinforcements sent after you from a heavy 25 times during a single run.

Heavy Handed - Kill a heavy using melee weapons.

Heavy Killer - Kill 25 Heavies during a single run.

Heavy Destroyer - Kill 500 Heavies (over the course of many runs)

H. I. L. F. - Kill 1,500 Heavies "  "

That's all for now. Got to run. Real quick before I do run I also wanted to suggest having a ToME style of 'Achievement's' for 1.0 Cogmind that separates Achievements for Explorer, Adventurer and Rogue. By that I mean, if done right now using the current 256 it would essentially be 768 Achievements to work towards unlocking. Or maybe have Explorer/Adventurer combined and have Rogue separated out giving us 512 Achievements to work towards.

I think playing on the lower difficulties is great, even for seasoned Cogminds and especially early on for new players when you are grasping the ropes but it does create a bit of 'cheese' and ruined some of the fun for me when I got many achievements too easy playing on Explorer/Adventurer.

While ToME's 1700+ achievements might not be a direction you want to go (although the more the better I say!), I do love that it gave me incentive to play on different difficulties/game modes without penalty and still kept the hard achievements safe for me to tackle when I was ready (roguelike/nightmare, roguelike/madness). Please consider locking off Rogue achievements since it's the real way to play and is so much harder to get them on it versus the other difficulties :D Getting chevo's on Rogue are special to me and would be nice to know what I unlocked on that difficulty versus in an easier difficulties.

Thanks! Happy Holidays Kyzrati and everyone else who stumbled upon this. :D

I believe the game already tracks which achievements were earned on which difficulty mode. I think you can view this information ingame, in the ESC menu --> Records --> Achievements.
Steam doesn't track this information and we probably don't want to make separate achievements for different difficulties, since that just adds achievement bloat - no one cares about majority of such achievements, yet they show up in all achievement lists.

IMO, it makes sense to make a select few achievements be locked only to rogue difficulty, such as a separate achievement for "Win a run on rogue difficulty", but that's about it.
Title: Re: Steam Achievement Ideas
Post by: Kyzrati on February 03, 2022, 09:10:32 PM
Yeah games that separate out achievements for different difficulties just bloat their achievements, which is highly undesirable (even more so in a game that already has a ridiculous number of them!). And Cogmind itself does indeed record the highest difficulty at which an achievement was earned, and also offers a way to reset achievements, among other features that Steam doesn't support so if you play on Steam you're kind of out of luck with that (blame Valve :P). But no, I think the ToME approach is actually pretty bad, and was only necessary because Steam forces it to work that way.

I finally, after 2 years of playing this game, transformed the Heart of Steel.

Of all the things that need achievements, it’s this.

(And warbot could use a buff for all the work I put into him too. He couldn’t even make it through one caves level. I know he meant well though. RIP steel dude)
Title: Re: Steam Achievement Ideas
Post by: Kyzrati on March 18, 2022, 05:10:52 AM
Yes all new content and features that would be suitable for achievements will get them when the next batch comes up (already been over 3 years now? xD).

Warbot definitely not getting buffed, though--they're already quite good, but that being your first time working with them you probably weren't familiar with their capabilities enough to take maximum advantage. They can carry you pretty well in a lot of situations, but are a lot more effective with support. They're also definitely still just a very mid-game bot, so gotta work towards completing them before they get outclassed.

At the same time, always important to remember that variance is a thing! Get a good item and the one time you use it things don't turn out well? Don't rush to discount it. Last time I used Warbot I released them in an emergency situation in Factory where I was otherwise definitely gonna die, against a whole convoy and other squads, and they cleaned up a ton of bots with almost no help from me and I managed to limp away... They did not survive that encounter, but at least the run was saved xD

As usual, whether or not it's really worth it will depend on your build strategy.

So close! (hidden) Die with a Surface exit in view.

An achievement for doing a bad thing. However, people who are invested enough to look up the rare (and hidden) achievements are probably the people who have already got a win and are looking for more things to do (like going for the extended wins). Even the best players will sometimes be forced to take "w0 of shame". So, one time, instead of taking another w0 of shame, they could grab this achievement. So the downside of this achievement shouldn't be too bad.
On the other hand it should feel awesome when triggered accidentally.
Title: Re: Steam Achievement Ideas
Post by: Kyzrati on March 23, 2022, 02:28:51 AM
Very much agree on the accidental triggering of this sort of thing being a potential bonus, and it's something that happens to a fair number of people, actually, even really good players. That said, I don't think this one would qualify for an achievement under my requirements, if only because it's so specific that many people will be unlikely to ever get it accidentally, and as a negative "achievement" it's not something we want to encourage people doing.

I went over all my achievement categories and requirements for inclusion in the achievement design article years back, and any that require you do a "bad thing" are particularly strict. It's gotta be something that will happen to everyone eventually, within reason (assuming they try different play styles), and not be all too rare in general.

There are plenty of other achievements and goals we'll be adding, including of course lots of late-game stuff, so not really any particular need to have "something else to do" besides the so-called "w0 of shame" :P

More achievements related to propulsion. After doing the one for flight-only made me understand how good flight was, i realized achievements that have players try different playstyles are a good way to make them expand their strategical arsenal.

Running joke threat : Win (with X hostiles destroyed? with X alert reached?) without attaching any propulsion except legs.

Slow and deadly wins the race : Win without attaching any propulsion except threads.

NPC propulsiontm : Win without attaching any propulsion except hover.
